NEW DELHI: India’s professional boxer Mandeep Jangra delivered a near-perfect, controlled performance to secure the World Boxing Federation’s (WBF) super featherweight world title in the Cayman Islands. He defeated British boxer Conor McIntosh 10-0 in a unanimous decision.

The historic feat meant Mandeep became the first Indian pugilist to become a world champion in any pro-boxing event category. The Haryana boxer, who won a Commonwealth Games silver medal in the 2014 Glasgow edition as an amateur, delivered powerful punches from the outset, maintaining his stamina throughout the 10 rounds. His opponent struggled to find his rhythm and failed to match Mandeep’s pace and flurry of punches. The 31-year-old Indian maintained the upper hand in most rounds to achieve one of the biggest victories of his pro career.

“I have worked hard for years to achieve this. It is a matter of pride for me that I could bring glory to the country. I think this title will open the way for other boxers of the country and they will also decide to make a career in professional boxing. This is a huge win for Indian boxing,” Mandeep said.

“Our boxers are good and there is no dearth of talent. If they get good promoters and managers, they can also become world champions. This world title proves that. I am thankful to my sponsor, chief coach Roy Jones, assistant coach Asa Beard and Angel for believing in my abilities and helping me become a world champion,” he added.

Mandeep made his pro boxing debut in 2021 and has faced only one defeat in his professional career so far. He trains under former Olympic silver medallist Roy Jones Jr. Mandeep has won 11 out of his 12 fights in his pro career with seven being knockout victories.

“Pro boxing career has been rewarding for me. I am happy that I switched from amateur boxing to the professional circuit. We need more Indian boxers in this set-up. I hope the young Indian boxers get inspired by this win and make a career in pro boxing,” he said.

During his days as an amateur boxer, Mandeep was coached by 2006 CWG gold medallist Akhil Kumar, who helped him win a silver at the 2013 Asian amateur championships before guiding him to the runner-up finish at the Glasgow Games.
