Explaining Death through Bhagwat Gita verses
Bhagwat Gita believes that Death is a mere transition of the soul. It looks at Death as the soul merely changing its garb as it moves from life to life. The body is mortal, while the soul is not. Here are some timeless verses from the Gita.
Chapter 2, Verse 27 (Original Sanskrit):
"jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyur dhruvaṁ janma mṛtasya ca |
tasmād aparihārye ’rthe na tvaṁ śocitum arhasi ||"
"For one who has been born, death is certain, and for one who has died, birth is certain. Therefore, in an inevitable situation, you should not lament."
Chapter 2, Verse 20 (Original Sanskrit):
"na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ |
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato ’yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre ||"
"The soul never takes birth and never dies at any time nor does it come into being again when the body is created. The soul is birthless, eternal, imperishable, and timeless and is never destroyed when the body is destroyed."
Chapter 2, Verse 22 (Original Sanskrit):
"vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛhṇāti naro ’parāṇi |
tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāny anyāni saṁyāti navāni dehī ||"
"Just as a person puts on new garments after discarding the old ones, similarly, the soul accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones."
Chapter 2, Verse 23 (Original Sanskrit):
"nainaṁ chindanti śastrāṇi nainaṁ dahati pāvakaḥ |
na cainaṁ kledayanty āpo na śoṣayati mārutaḥ ||"
"The soul cannot be pierced by weapons, burned by fire, moistened by water, or withered by the wind."
Chapter 2, Verse 13 (Original Sanskrit):
"dehino ’smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā |
tathā dehāntara-prāptir dhīras tatra na muhyati ||"
"Just as the soul passes through childhood, youth, and old age in this body, it similarly passes into another body at death. A wise person is not deluded by this change."
