Fire breaks out at Maha Kumbh

A massive fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Sunday, caused by an LPG cylinder blast in Sector 19. The flames spread quickly, engulfing nearby tents. Smoke can be seen rising near the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the Saraswati rivers.

Maha Kumbh in full swing

​The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, which began on January 13, continues to attract millions of devotees. Despite the fire incident, the religious gathering is proceeding smoothly. More than 7.72 crore people have already taken part in the holy dip, with over 46.95 lakh devotees bathing in the Ganga on Sunday alone.​

Evacuation efforts

As the fire spread, the authorities quickly evacuated the area to ensure the safety of those in the vicinity. With the flames threatening multiple tents, evacuation efforts were a priority, with police and administrative teams working to move people to safety.

Property damages

Significant property damage was reported in the fire. Eighteen tents, including one belonging to the Gita Press, were consumed by the flames. A survey of the damages is underway, as authorities assess the financial impact on the camp's infrastructure, with plans to provide relief and support for affected parties.

Thick smoke covered the site

A dramatic visual of the fire’s intensity was captured as thick black smoke billowed from the affected area. The sight of the smoke rising into the sky sent a strong signal of the disaster. The smoke could be seen from different points around the Maha Kumbh Mela, adding to the urgency of the response efforts.

Fire crews in action

Two LPG cylinders exploded in the camp area of Sector 19 at the Maha Kumbh Mela, sparking a huge fire. The blasts sent thick smoke rising into the sky, visible from a distance. Fire crews were immediately dispatched, with 15 fire tenders at the site battling the flames, ensuring the safety of people and property.

No casualties reported

The fire was finally contained around 4:30 pm on Sunday. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported despite the destruction.

CM Yogi visited the site

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath visited the scene of the fire, showing concern for the ongoing situation. He reviewed the safety protocols and the efforts of emergency services. PM Modi also enquired about the incident over a call with CM Yogi.
