Navratri 2024: Nine Forms of Goddess Durga, Vahan, and Significance
As we all know that Navratri Festival began on October 3, 2024 and devotees prepared so many things to welcome Maa Durga at home. As the name suggests Navratri, which means Nine days and nine nights of worshipping Goddess Durga. During Navratri, nine different forms of Maa Durga is worshipped. These nine days are considered most sacred and auspicious and it reminds the devotees that how Maa Durga defeated and killed demon Mahishasur and established righteousness in the universe. She is the divine feminine energy who controls this universe.

In the year 2024, Shardiya Navratri is started from today i.e., on October 3, 2024 and it will end with Dussehra celebration and that will be celebrated on October 12, 2024.

| Navratri Day 1 | Goddess Shailputri | The first day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailputri. Maa Shailputri is the form of Goddess Parvati as she took birth as the daughter of Lord Himalaya. Shail means the mountain so she is known as Shailputri, the daughter of the mountain. She is depicted riding a bull (Nandi) and holding a trident and a lotus. |
| Navratri Day 2 | Goddess Brahmacharini | The second day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Brahmacharini. Devotees worship Maa Brahmacharini on this day. In this form she strictly penanced to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Maa Brahmacharini signifies knowledge, widsom and austerity. She is seen holding a rudraksha mala and a kamandalu (water pot). |
| Navratri Day 3 | Goddess Chandraghanta | Maa Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day of Navratri. She is also known as Chandrakhanda, Chandika or Rannchandi who has ten arms and holds an assortment of weapons in her hands. The names chandraghanta means, one who has half moon shape like bell. He third eye is always open. Chandraghanta symbolizes bravery and courage. She is depicted with a crescent moon on her forehead and rides a tiger. |
| Navratri Day 4 | Goddess Kushmanda | Devotees pray to Maa Kushmanda on the fourth day of Navratri. Maa Kushmanda is known to have created the universe with her smile. The goddess rides a lion and is depicted with eight hands holding a kamandalu, bow, arrow, lotus, trident, a jar of nectar, a discus. 'Kushmanda' is the sanskrit name of the Goddess which means Ku - little, Ushma - energy or light and Anda - egg. She is associated with the energy of the sun. |
| Navratri Day 5 | Goddess Skandamata | Maa Skandmata is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's son, Kartikeya, is also known as Skand, and that's how this form of the Goddess derives her name. She represents the motherly love. She is seen carrying her son, Lord Kartikeya, and rides a lion. |
| Navratri Day 6 | Goddess Katyayani | Navratri day six is dedicated to Maa Katyayani. As per Hindu Scriptures, Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva combined their energies to create Maa Katyayani, who killed the demon Mahishasura. Goddess Katyayani is known as Mahishasurmardini. Maa Katyayani is known as the warrior form of Maa Durga. She is named Katyayani after sage Katyayana performed penance to please Maa Durga and asked her to be born as his daughter. |
| Navratri Day 7 | Goddess Kaalratri | Maa Kaalratri is worshipped on the seventh day of Navratri. She is the fiercest form of goddess Durga, rides a donkey, and has a dark complexion and long untied hair. It is believed that, when Goddess Parvati removed her outer golden skin to kill demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha, she was known as Goddess Kalaratri. |
| Navratri Day 8 | Goddess Maha Gauri | Goddess Mahagauri is worshipped on the eighth day of Navratri. She is extremely bright and shines like a moon. She represents purity and tranquillity. It is believed that she can fulfil all desires of her devotees. |
| Navratri Day 9 | Goddess Siddhidatri | Devotees pray to Maa Siddhidatri on the ninth day of Navratri. She is the ninth form of Maa Durga. Siddhi means supernatural power or meditative ability, and Datri means who is the giver of all siddhis. Mata Siddhidatri grants knowledge to her devotees. |
