How to spot and deal with fake friends at work

Do you have workplace "friends" who are nice to you on your face, but behind your back they take just a few seconds to flip the script and gossip about you? Such colleagues are energy vampires disguised as "friends". Having such fake friends in life erode your trust, sabotages your careers and add stress too your life. If you too are dealing with such people in your life, then here we list some signs to spot them quick and tips to handle such fake friends:

2/6

Observe their actions, not words

Genuine people follow through on what they say, but fake friends? Their words and action often do not match. They might be charming speakers, but when it comes to their promises-- they often cancel at the last minute, forget favours, and only give selective support (when it suits or benefits them).
Journal for three months and notice: Who shows up consistently? For those who don't, distance from them emotionally— be polite to them, but do not share much with them.

3/6

Limit personal interaction and information

Oversharing leads to betrayal— fake friends might pretend to be nice to you only for you to give details about yourself, which they would then use against you. Instead, once you have identified them as a fake friend at work, maintain your distance from such people. Be polite but be sure of what you speak to them. Compartmentalise your conversations: Work talk only that too superficial; no family woes or dating disasters discussion with them. Follow the Gray Rock Method-- which is to simply become boring (just like a gray rock!) so that they do not interfere in your life much.

4/6

Build your inner circle

Don't go solo— instead, have your 2-3 genuine allies at work through consistent value exchange. Shared lunches, collaborative wins forge real bonds. Harvard research shows that strong networks can boost promotions by roughly 30%.
Authentic spot colleagues: They reciprocate your energy, maintain confidentiality, and cheerlead your growth. But, fake friends compete with you.

5/6

Document interactions professionally

Document your interactions with fake friends at work-- email trails for agreements, CC neutral parties on decisions-- so that they cannot gossip, misinterpret or sabotage your career. No accusations—just facts. If sabotage emerges (credit-stealing, exclusion), HR logs protect you.

6/6

Stay centered and be mindful

Fake "friends" thrive on attention— so, starve them by excelling silently. Utilise your energy into learning new skills, networking, and getting results. Celebrate your wins internally; let success silence your doubters.
Remember, fake friends test your resilience, revealing true character. You've spotted them; now lead with grace.
