Scandalous royal divorces

Royal marriages were once regarded as sacred alliances - built not only on love, but also on power, lineage, and political survival. For centuries, the idea of a royal divorce was unthinkable, often considered a scandal that could shake kingdoms and rewrite laws. Yet history proves the crowns do not guarantee that royal marriages would always be successful. Behind the happy-couple public appearances and the palace walls, many royal unions crumbled under pressure. Here we list some such royal divorces from around the world that stunned society and changed the course of history forever:

2/8

King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon (England)

One of the most infamous royal divorces in history is perhaps of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon's. Their separation didn’t just end a marriage; it also changed the religious map of England! They were married for over 20 years, but when Catherine failed to produce a male heir, Henry sought an annulment of their marriage. When the Catholic Church refused, Henry completely broke away from Rome entirely and established the Church of England. The divorce scandal shocked Europe, branded Catherine a tragic figure, and also set off a chain of marriages, executions, and religious reforms that still echo today.

Princess Diana and Prince Charles (United Kingdom)

Few divorces captured global attention back in the 90s like that of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. What began as a fairy-tale wedding in 1981, within years broke under the weight of infidelity and scrutiny by the public and media. In 1995, Princess Diana gave an explosive interview to BBC where she revealed that there were always “three people” in their marriage, which caused its breakdown. This also shattered royal silence on Diana and Charles' divorce.

Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones (United Kingdom)

Queen Elizabeth II's younger sister, Princess Margaret’s marriage to photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones also couldn't survive the test of time. It was modern, glamorous, and doomed. Their 1960 marriage shocked traditionalists, but their divorce in 1978 was even more scandalous - it was the first royal divorce which was in close proximity to the British throne in centuries.

King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía (Spain– Separation)

Though King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía never officially divorced, their separation shocked Spain. Their marriage broke due to allegations of infidelity and scandals. While they remained married on paper, they lived separate lives for decades.

Crown Prince Naruhito and Masako Owada (Japan– Near Breakdown)

Similarly in Japan, Crown Prince Naruhito and Masako Owada never divorced, but their marriage faced intense public scrutiny because of which it nearly broke them. Masako, a former diplomat, struggled under rigid royal expectations to produce a male heir to the throne. Her mental health suffered, sparking debates about the emotional cost of being a royal.

Princess Caroline of Monaco and Philippe Junot

Princess Caroline’s 1978 marriage to French businessman Philippe Junot ended in divorce just two years later in 1980, and it left everyone stunned. The glamorous match quickly soured amid lifestyle clashes and rumours of infidelity. Caroline later admitted the marriage was a mistake born of youthful rebellion.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson (UK)

Prince Charles' (now King Charles III) youngest brother, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s divorce was one of the most scandalous royal divorces in its history. The duo got married in 1986, but cracks soon surfaced in their marriage due to Andrew’s long absences due to his duty in Navy and media scrutiny. In 1992 when paparazzi photographs of Sarah Ferguson with another man went viral, it caused the breakdown of their marriage and they divorced in 1996.
