SONIPAT: Olympic bronze medallist wrestler
Yogeshwar Dutt received a hero's welcome at his village Bhainswal on his arrival at around 3 am on Tuesday.
The villagers accorded a warm reception amid loud cheers, bursting of firecrackers and beating of drums.
Village women sung traditional songs and youths pushed each other to shake hands with Dutt and lifted him on their shoulders several times.
Dutt's mother Sushila Devi offered sweets to him while the village women sang welcome songs to mark the occasion.
Dutt firstly put the Olympic medal in front of the photo of his late father Ram Mehar Singh and later decorated the medal around the neck of his mother Sushila Devi.
"You have fulfilled the aspirations of your parents, family members and other near and dear ones who always hoped for an Olympic medal. Your father would have been the happiest man today," said Sushila.
Dutt was unable to get some rest till afternoon as the stream of visitors kept on knocking on his doors.
"I am overwhelmed by the response of the people here. We were given rousing welcome at the airport on arrival. And on reaching the village, it's unending streak of visitors . Though I was hopeful to take rest and have a lot of ghar ka khana on reaching home, but all the fatigue and hunger seems to have vanished on seeing the people's affection," said Dutt while talking to the TOI on Tuesday evening.
He said, "I hope that Sushil's as well as my medal winning performance at the London Olympics will ignite a fire among the budding sportspersons to become better and the best to win more medals for the country not only in wrestling but in other sports also."
