NEW DELHI: Sports minister
Ajay Maken on Sunday congratulated grapplers
Sushil Kumar and
Yogeshwar Dutt on winning the silver and bronze medals respectively and also hailed India's overall performance at the London Olympics.
"I congratulate Sushil Kumar for his unprecedented feat on behalf of sports ministry and the Indian Govt," Maken said.
"Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt have shown that India can be a force to reckon with in the age-old Indian sport of wrestling.
"Govt of India has already announced that gold medalists will get 50 lakhs, silver medallists 30 lakh and bronze medallists 20 lakhs," he added.
The sports minister also heaped praise on all the other athletes who represented India in the London Olympics.
"We are proud of not just those who have won medals but also those who have qualified for the mega event. Qualifying in itself is a great feat and we need to applaud the efforts of our sportsperson," he said.
"We had some rough decision in boxing but the boxers performed admirably. India was unlucky as many of the players were placed in the top ten, some even 4th or 5th. We may have had more medals if luck was on our side.
"It is a proud moment for us as this is our best ever medal haul," he added.
