Travelling in a War Zone: How to stay safe and 5 crucial things to keep in mind

The year 2026 began with war. By the end of February 2026, the world saw powerful nations in conflict. The conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran disrupted air travel worldwide. The intensity of war left thousands stranded at the airports and made travelling a task. However, travelling through a conflict or war zone is never recommended, unless there’s an absolutely emergency or unavoidable circumstances,
Governments across the globe advise against it as such regions are unpredictable, and often life-threatening. As per global advisories cited by Reuters, travellers should “maintain a high level of vigilance”. Travellers should be aware of risks involved and take an informed decision.

On this note, let’s have a look at five essential safety measures to keep in mind while travelling in a war zone.

Always, like always follow official travel advisories

Now this is the most important part of travel in war zones, following official travel advisories. Staying informed through government advisories such as foreign ministries and embassies offer clarity.

In such cases, the government keeps issuing alerts regarding safety and evacuation routes. Safety experts from international platforms stress that war zones are “distinctly dangerous” and should be avoided. If someone is stuck in a war zone, registering with your embassy is the first suggestion and authorities can locate and assist accordingly.

Avoid attention

Visibility could turn dangerous in war regions. It is suggested to maintain a low-key for tourists and foreigners, as they are often seen as soft targets for kidnapping or political retaliation. Several reports highlighted in international coverage show how travellers may face hostility due to certain (their) nationality. Experts also advise to avoid political discussions at any cost as sometimes opinions can escalate tensions.

As per a report published in NY Times on 22 March 2026, the State Department issued a “Worldwide Caution” for American travellers after hostilities broke out with Iran. Experts warned that people should take it seriously even in countries typically friendly to US residents. Travellers were advised against broadcasting their nationality or talking politics with locals.
Blending in with locals can be helpful during such times.

Understand On-Ground Risks

No price for guessing that war zones are dotted with dangers that can’t be seen through naked eyes. Landmines and unexploded materials can remain active for years. These risks are often there in the areas which look calm and peaceful. Therefore, travellers are advised to avoid roads unknown and silence.
While on roads, experts recommend:
Keep your hands visible at all times for armed securityDon’t show sudden movementsRemain calm

Have an exit/emergency plan

Another expert recommendation is always be ready with an exit plan as things can go wrong or escalate very quickly in war zones. With airports shutting down, airlines cancelling, rerouting or rescheduling and transportation can become inaccessible within hours.

In case conflict begins during your stay:
Move to a safer place
Follow local safety instructions Stay indoors
Be ready with emergency supplies, such as food, water and first aid
Ensure your phone is charged

Personal security should be the priority

Nothing is more important than your own security in a war zone. Survival is the priority. Avoid unnecessary movement. Avoid venturing into unfamiliar roads and areas.

In case of active danger:

Find yourself a secure hiding spaceStay away from open areasFollow the “cover and concealment” principle

Understand, travelling in a war zone is highly dangerous. As global tensions escalate, safety experts stress caution and awareness and preparedness.

But it is still recommended to avoid conflict zones at any cost. But if caught in unwarned situations, staying informed and alert can improve your chances of staying safe in war zones.
