From Vrindavan to Barsana: The colourful pictures of Braj Ki Holi

Braj Ki Holi is probably one of the most famous and colourful Holi celebrations that takes place in the sacred land of Braj. For those who don’t know, Braj is a region in Uttar Pradesh that encompasses areas like Mathura, Vrindavan, and Barsana.
The Holi of Braj is rooted in the legends of Lord Krishna and Radha. The region is noted for its lively music and unique traditions like Lathmar Holi and Phoolon Ki Holi.
Braj Ki Holi is all about the legends of Lord Krishna and Radha. Legend has it that Lord Krishna used to play Holi here as a child with his friends and Radha Rani. The kids' Holi used to be fun as they would. This divine play is commemorated every year in the Braj region and people from across the globe visit here to be a part of it.
Let's have a look at six pictures that define the beauty and uniqueness of Braj ki Holi.

2/7

Traditional Celebrations

The celebrations begin with Lathmar Holi in Barsana. It is when local women beat men with sticks (lathis) playfully. No harm caused! This is a unique part of Braj Ki Holi, and photographers and tourists from all over wait for a long time to capture this energetic and vibrant event.

3/7

Phoolon Ki Holi

Another best part of Braj is phoolon ki Holi which is celebrated over multiple days, with Rang Panchami being the main day for the festivities. The Phoolon Ki Holi in Vrindavan is particularly famous, where devotees throw flowers instead of colours, creating a spectacle of petals.

4/7

Celebrations at several venues

Holi in Braj is not limited to one day or place. Different towns celebrate at different times. Vrindavan and Mathura host huge processions, with the most popular being the one that takes place at the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan, where thousands of people gather to shower colors on one another.

5/7

Distinctive colours and music

The festival is not only about colours but also about folk music. Traditional Holi songs (like the Krishna songs) are sung throughout the celebrations by local artists. They use dholak and manjeera to accompany the dances.

6/7

Holi with Thandai

Thandai is the main ingredient of the Holi celebrations. It’s a traditional drink made with milk, spices, and sometimes bhang. They say Holi is incomplete with thandai!

7/7

Krishna Vibes

Despite the boisterous nature of the festival, Braj Ki Holi has a devotional side. It’s seen as a way to express love and devotion towards Lord Krishna and Radha, with the colors representing the joy of divine love. Devotees gather at temples, participate in processions, and pray for blessings during the festivities.
