8 must-visit places on the Delhi–Manali–Leh trip that are worth the detour

This Delhi–Manali–Leh route is that kind of road that that every road tripper dreams of doing it some day. Its fun-filled itinerary of chai-sipping in bustling Delhi streets to finding peace in that remote monastery in Leh, this route offer a rollercoaster of culture, scenery, and many such great moments. So, no matter what you choose, a bike or you are in a car, this road trip has everything, jaw-dropping landscape, unmatched beauty, full of emotions, and offers you stories that you’ll keep bragging about for years. You can make stops as many as you want, but do add these 8 places that you can visit along the way.

2/9

India Gate, Delhi

Built to honour Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting in World War I and other wars, and the Amar Jawan Jyoti (eternal flame) under the arch pays tribute to the Unknown Soldier. Surrounded by lush lawns, it’s a popular spot for evening strolls, picnics, and soaking in the patriotic atmosphere, especially when it’s beautifully lit at night.

3/9

Hidimba Devi Temple, Manali

It’s one of those places in Manali that you should definitely visit at least once in your lifetime. It’s an ancient temple dedicated to the wife of Lord Bhima, Hidimba Devi. Built in 16th century, it’s where you get to learn about ancient legends.

In Manali, Hidimba Devi is held in high cultural and spiritual regard, revered as a local deity. While Navaratri across most regions is dedicated to Goddess Durga, here the focus turns to Goddess Hidimba. Her temple becomes a hub of activity during the festival, drawing large crowds that reflect the deep devotion of the worshippers.

4/9

Solang Valley, Manali

Think of Solang Valley as Manali’s outdoor adventure hub. Paragliding? Check. Zorbing? Absolutely. Snow in winter? Absolutely yes. Even if you’re not into thrill sports, the panoramic views alone will leave you questioning why you missed visiting this place till now.

5/9

Rohtang Pass, Manali

At 13,050 ft, Rohtang is where the real altitude game begins. The pass offers jaw-dropping views of glaciers, valleys, and snow-capped peaks, sometimes all at once. Be prepared for sudden weather mood swings; where there is sunshine one minute, and there might be snowflakes the next.

6/9

Keylong, Lahaul Valley

Often overlooked, Keylong is a peaceful stopover between Manali and Leh. Surrounded by rugged mountains and monasteries, it’s the kind of place where you slow down, sip on butter tea, and wonder if you should just stay forever.

7/9

Sarchu

The high-altitude desert of Sarchu sits right on the Himachal–Ladakh border. It’s the halfway mark and a popular camping site under an absurdly starry sky. Just remember, it’s freezing at night, so your light jacket won’t cut it.

8/9

Magnetic Hill, Ladakh

Prepare to question physics. This optical illusion makes it seem like your vehicle is rolling uphill. It’s fun, weird, and perfect for that next-level experience.

9/9

Thiksey Monastery, Leh

Perched on a hill, this monastery offers breathtaking views of the Indus Valley. The massive Maitreya Buddha statue here is a must-see, and the peaceful ambience is the perfect finale to your epic road trip.
The Delhi–Manali–Leh trip is an adrenaline-pumped vacation full of city chaos, mountain serenity, and desert mystery. Every stop adds a different flavour to your journey. Make sure that you are ready for this trip, whenever you plan one. This is because it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
