Numerous places around the world are revered as sacred sites where gods or divine beings are believed to have resided, visited, or manifested, according to various religious and cultural traditions. These locations hold immense spiritual significance, drawing pilgrims and visitors seeking divine connection. These destinations are some of the most sacred, most visited and most mystical places in the world, and to experience these sacred spaces, thousands of people travel thousands of miles. Nidhivan, India

Nidhivan, a sacred grove in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, India, is believed to be the divine playground of Lord Krishna. It is believed that Krishna performs his divine Rasa Leela with Radha and the gopis every night in this forested area. Nobody is allowed to be in the sacred grove after sunset, and it is also believed that one is not supposed to witness the dance. The tulsi plants in Nidhivan are believed to turn into gopis during the night.

Mount Kailash, Tibet (China)

Mount Kailash is considered the earthly abode of Lord Shiva in Hinduism. It is believed that it is here that Lord Shiva and Parvati reside. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is associated with Demchog, a tantric deity. The mountain is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Bon religion. It is forbidden to climb Mount Kailash, however, circumambulating the mountain, a practice called Kora, is done to gain blessings.

Mount Olympus, Greece

According to ancient Greek mythology, Mount Olympus, the highest peak in Greece, was believed to be the divine residence of the Olympian gods, led by Zeus. It was believed that on this mountain gods came together to govern the universe. This was a site of active worship back in the day. Today, Mount Olympus is a cultural and historical symbol.

Varanasi, India

Varanasi or Kashi, one of the oldest living cities in the world, is believed to be the earthly abode of Lord Shiva. It is believed that it is here that devotees can attain liberation or moksha. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Shiva, is a focal point for pilgrims seeking moksha. Varanasi is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India for Hindus.

Jerusalem, Israel

Jerusalem is a sacred city for three religions–Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Judaism, it is believed that God’s presence (Shekhinah) resided in the Holy of Holies in the First and Second Temples. In Christianity, it is associated with Jesus Christ, considered the Son of God, who walked and preached here. In Islam, the Dome of the Rock marks the spot where Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.

Ayodhya, the birthplace and earthly residence of Lord Rama, is one of the most sacred sites for Hindus. The Ram Janmabhoomi site, where a grand temple now stands, is believed to be the exact location of his birth, making it an important place of pilgrimage. The ancient city of Teotihuacan, with its Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, was a spiritual center for Mesoamerican civilizations. It was believed to be a place where gods resided. The Feathered Serpent god Quetzalcoatl was particularly associated with the site.
