Offbeat India: Things you will experience ONLY in Northeast India

Have you been to Northeast India yet? If Yes, good for you. If No, well, there’s a region that is just waiting to sweep you off your feet, and leave you speechless. The region is known for its unparalleled diversity, offering unique experiences that set it apart from the rest of India and the world. It’s true. From its lush landscapes and vibrant cultures to its distinct traditions and natural wonders, Northeast India provides experiences that are both immersive and unforgettable. The region’s uniqueness is what draws visitors from all over the world, especially those who are looking for true offbeat experiences. Here are some of the things you will experience only in Northeast India.

2/7

Floating phumdis of Loktak Lake in Manipur

Loktak Lake in Manipur is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and the only place in the world where you can witness phumdis—floating islands made of vegetation, soil, and organic matter. The largest phumdi covers 40 square kilometers, hosting the unique Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park and home to the endangered Sangai deer, endemic to this region. A boat ride on the lake will let you experience the serene landscape, birdlife, and a chance to observe the local fishermen’s lifestyle on these floating islands.

3/7

Hornbill Festival in Nagaland

The Hornbill Festival, also known as the Festival of Festivals, is held annually in December (1-10) in Nagaland. The festival is a vibrant showcase of the region’s tribal heritage. The festival brings together all Naga tribes, each displaying their distinct traditions through dance, music, and crafts. Festival goers can witness warriors in traditional attire, taste Naga cuisine like smoked pork with bamboo shoots, and witness cultural performances like the Naga war dance. The sights are simply unforgettable, and can’t be had anywhere else in the country.

World’s Longest Sandstone Cave – Krem Puri in Meghalaya

Meghalaya is home to Krem Puri, the world’s longest sandstone cave, stretching approximately 24.5 kilometers in Mawsynram. The cave was discovered in 2016, and is a geological wonder exclusive to Northeast India. If you are a fan of spelunking adventures, this cave won’t disappoint. There are guided tours that take you through intricate limestone formations, underground rivers, and fossil passages.

5/7

Majuli – World’s largest river island in Assam

Located in the Brahmaputra River, Majuli is the world’s largest river island and a cultural hub of Assamese Vaishnavism. Visitors can explore the satras (monasteries) and witness Sattriya dance, a classical art form born here. Budget travelers can explore by bicycle, stay in bamboo huts, and savor Assamese thalis.

6/7

Dzukou Valley’s seasonal flower blooms in Nagaland-Manipur border

The Dzukou Valley, straddling Nagaland and Manipur, is famous for its rolling hills and seasonal blooms, particularly the rare Dzukou lily, found only here. During June to September, the valley transforms into a carpet of pink and white lilies, truly a sight to behold. There are trekking routes from Viswema or Jakhama that are quite budget-friendly, with basic campsite facilities.

7/7

Living Root Bridges of Meghalaya

Meghalaya’s living root bridges are called Jinkieng Jri in the local Khasi and Jaintia dialect. Found primarily in Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong, these bridges are bioengineered marvels crafted by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes using Ficus elastica tree roots. These bridges, like the double-decker root bridge in Nongriat, are a global anomaly, growing stronger over time.
