Gulmarg in Kashmir declared tobacco-free zones to promote healthier tourism
In a recent update, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has declared Gulmarg and the nearby Tangmarg a tobacco-free zone officially. The government has urged visitors to leave behind any tobacco products when planning a trip to Gulmarg. The town is noted for its amazing views and adventure-filled activities, particularly skiing. This new initiative aims to preserve the natural beauty and health of the area.
As per an official order from the Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla, both Gulmarg and Tangmarg are now recognised as "Tobacco-Free Zones" and "Smoke-Free Tourist Areas." The order explicitly prohibits the smoking and spitting of tobacco in these areas, with violations being treated as punishable offenses.
In addition to this directive, the administration has also asked the Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla, the Chief Executive Officer of the Gulmarg Development Authority, and other relevant officials to ensure the enforcement of these rules and regulations and take it seriously. Law enforcement agencies will be closely monitoring the area to ensure compliance with the tobacco ban.
This announcement comes ahead of the highly anticipated Khelo India Winter Games, set to take place in Gulmarg at the end of February. The event is one of India’s premier sports gatherings, showcasing activities like ice skating, ice hockey, skiing, and snowboarding.
Over 1,000 athletes from across the nation are expected to participate in various events such as alpine skiing, nordic skiing, ski mountaineering, snowboarding, and snowshoe racing. The games are expected to attract significant attention, further solidifying Gulmarg’s status as a major tourism and sports destination.
