Air India and Spice Jet issue travel alerts as dense fog blankets the skies in North India; more flight disruption on December 18
Given the current weather in North India, prominent airlines including Air India and Spice Jet have issued travel advisories on their official X channels warning passengers of potential and ongoing disruptions to flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi. The fog and haze have reduced visibility to zero in some regions. Because of reduced visibility in Delhi and nearby regions during the early hours, airport authorities had to implement low-visibility procedures. These conditions are now affecting domestic flight schedules.

Air India acknowledged the challenging weather forecast, emphasising that “potential dense fog conditions resulting in poor visibility may impact flight operations” at its core hub in Delhi and at select northern and eastern airports over the next few days.

Over the next few days, potential dense fog conditions resulting in poor visibility may impact flight operations at our primary hub in Delhi, and a few airports in northern and eastern India, with a cascading effect in some other cities across our network. To help plan your travel better, especially during the holiday season, may we request you to check your flight status at https://airindia.com/in/en/manage/flight-status.html before heading to the airport. For your convenience, Air India has taken several proactive measures to mitigate the fog-related disruptions (https://bit.ly/4agYVyF). However, despite our efforts, if dense fog leads to sudden cancellations or prolonged delays, our ground colleagues will be available round-the-clock to assist you and make alternative arrangements. In addition, our 'FogCare' initiative allows passengers, booked on flights that are likely to be affected during the fog window, to receive advance alerts on their registered phone numbers, with the option to change their flights without any extra payment, or seek a full refund on the bookings without any penalty.
The airline’s travel advisory shows concern for passengers and that their safety is most important. Meanwhile travellers can do a few things:
Reschedule their flight at no additional charge
Receive a full refund without penalty if they choose not to travel

SpiceJet also took to its official X channel and shared multiple alerts, advising flyers that due to “bad weather (dense fog)” in Delhi, all departures, arrivals, and flights may be affected.
In one of its updates, it said:
#WeatherUpdate: Due to bad weather (poor visibility) at Varanasi (VNS), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights might be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status”
With several updates, the airlines informed passengers that due to bad weather conditions, flights in Darbhanga (DBR), Ayodhya (AYJ), Patna (PAT), Gorakhpur (GOP) and Delhi (DEL), all departures, arrivals, and their consequential flights may be affected.
While airports and airlines struggle to meet weather-related issues, it is important for passengers to continue checking their flight status before departing.
