Big cats in Rajasthan

From the regal Bengal tiger to the elusive leopard and the rare caracal, Rajasthan’s diverse landscapes provide a perfect habitat for these magnificent predators. Here are some of the best destinations in Rajasthan to witness big cat species in their natural glory.

3/10

Ranthambhore National Park

Ranthambhore is Rajasthan’s most famous wildlife reserve and among the best places in the world to see Bengal tigers in the wild. It was once the royal hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur.

4/10

Sariska Tiger Reserve

Located in the Alwar district, Sariska Tiger Reserve is a success story of tiger relocation and conservation. The reserve is spread over the Aravalli hills, and is one of the few reserves where both tigers and leopards coexist.

5/10

Jhalana Leopard Safari Park

Located in the outskirts of Jaipur city, Jhalana is one of India’s most accessible leopard reserves. This 23 sq km area is home to over 40 leopards, making it one of the best places in India for guaranteed leopard sightings.

6/10

Jawai

Jawai is Rajasthan’s best-kept wildlife secret. Here, leopards live harmoniously alongside the local Rabari tribe. The granite hills surrounding the Jawai Dam are home to one of the densest leopard populations in India.

7/10

Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve

This tiger reserve is spread across Kota, Bundi, and Jhalawar districts. Mukundara Hills was once the royal hunting ground of the Kota kings, but now a promising tiger habitat.

8/10

Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary

The rugged terrain of the Aravalli hills, with thick forests and water sources, makes it a suitable habitat for leopards, wolves, and hyenas. The sanctuary also has a rich population of jungle cats.

9/10

Desert National Park

The elusive caracal, a medium-sized wild cat known for its tufted ears and stealth, is occasionally spotted here. Spotting a caracal requires patience, but it’s a rare and unforgettable sight.

10/10

Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary is home to a healthy population of leopards, especially around the areas of Achalgarh and Trevor’s Tank. Mount Abu is Rajasthan’s only hill station.
