Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was designed by British architect Frederick William Stevens. Its construction was completed in 1888, nearly a decade after construction began. The railway station is a blend of Victorian Gothic elements with Indian motifs. The station’s domes, arches, and minarets reflect Mughal and Rajasthani influences, while the stained glass, pointed arches, and gargoyles showcase Gothic Revival elements. The station was originally called Victoria Terminus to honor Queen Victoria. However, the station was renamed in 1996 to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, paying tribute to the 17th-century Maratha warrior king who founded the Maratha Empire.
