Uttarakhand's Best Kept Secrets: 6 Hidden Villages for an Unforgettable Offbeat Travel Experience

Think of Uttarakhand and your mind creates pretty pictures of mountains, ancient temples and beautiful villages. While hill stations such as Nainital and Mussoorie take away all the limelight, there are some beautiful hidden villages which are beyond these tourist hubs. These hidden gems are untouched by commercial tourism.
These are the places where time slows down and the air feels fresh. For travellers seeking offbeat experiences, these hidden hamlets offer an immersive and enriching experiences.

2/7

Mana

Not many must be aware of the fact that Mana is near the Indo-Tibetan border and is known as the “last Indian village” before Tibet begins. Legend has it that Mana is the last place the Pandavas from the Mahabharata crossed on their way to heaven. The village is all about snow-covered peaks, ancient caves, and the Saraswati River. The village remains relatively uncrowded.

3/7

Khirsu

Another lesser-known gem in Uttarakhand, Khirsu in the Pauri Garhwal district, is a silent hill retreat that remains largely off tourist radar. Offering panoramic views of more than 300 snow-capped peaks including Trishul and Nanda Devi, Khirsu is ideal for nature walks, photography, and birdwatching. The village is surrounded by dense oak, pine, and deodar forests and apple orchards.

4/7

Munsiyari

Munsiyari is gaining popularity but still remains untouched thanks to its remote location. The village in Pithoragarh district lies at the base of the Panchachuli peaks and offers some awesome views of the surrounding valleys. It was once a thriving Indo-Tibetan trade route, and its villages still preserve that legacy. Darkot village here is noted for its woollen handicrafts and traditional stone houses.

5/7

Sankri

Another stunning village in Uttarkashi district, Sankri is the starting point for many offbeat treks including Har Ki Dun, Kedarkantha, and Bali Pass. The place might be small in area but it scores big on natural beauty, warm locals and wood-carved homes that add a rustic charm to the village. Sankri not only exudes calm, it offers stunning views of the Swargarohini range where visitors can experience homestays with locals.

6/7

Chopta

Chopta is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and is beautiful beyond words. The village is known among serious trekkers and its rustic village charm is often overlooked. With alpine meadows, rhododendron forests, and views of peaks like Chaukhamba and Nanda Devi, Chopta offers the much-needed silence and serenity to nature lovers. The nearby Tungnath temple, the highest Shiva shrine in the world, adds a spiritual dimension to your journey.

7/7

Jageshwar

Jageshwar, hidden amid a dense deodar forest near Almora, is not just a temple town but also a village rooted in heritage and spirituality. You’ll be amazed to know that the village is home to more than 100 ancient temples. It was once an important stop on the old pilgrimage route to Kailash Mansarovar.
