The epic Himalayan pilgrimage: 5 sacred places from Amarnath to Leh’s monasteries

This journey is less about reaching a destination and more about the moments in between—chanting with monks, catching your breath at high altitudes, and realizing that spirituality often comes with altitude sickness. Whether seeking divine blessings or just a break from Wi-Fi, this path is truly one of a kind. A spiritual journey through the Himalayas isn’t just about seeking blessings—it’s so much more than that. From Lord Shiva’s icy hideout to the peaceful monasteries of Ladakh, here’s an itinerary that guarantees both soul-searching and sore legs.

2/6

Amarnath Cave Temple

Amarnath is where devotees from across the world gather to pay respects to Lord Shiva. The sacred ice Shivling forms naturally, drawing thousands of devotees each year. Whether you take the quick but brutal Baltal route or the scenic Pahalgam trek, reaching here feels like a test of faith, endurance, and your ability to survive on chai and determination.

3/6

Martand Sun Temple

Built by a king with an eye for grandeur and unfortunately destroyed centuries ago, this temple dedicated to the Sun God still radiates an aura of mystery and devotion. Standing among its ruins, one can almost hear ancient chants—or maybe just the wind dramatically whistling through the pillars.

4/6

Mulbekh Monastery

As you cross into Ladakh, Mulbekh Monastery welcomes you with a giant 9-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha carved into a cliff face. It’s as if the the ambience inside the monastery is such that you don’t get too distracted by the mesmerizing landscapes.

5/6

Lamayuru Monastery

Lamayuru looks less like a monastery and more like an alien settlement, earning it the name ‘Moonland.’ The monks here have mastered the art of meditation (and looking incredibly serene), making it the perfect place to pause, breathe deeply, and wonder if you should just stay here forever.

6/6

Thiksey Monastery

With its grand architecture and a 49-foot-tall Buddha statue, Thiksey is the Ladakhi version of Tibet’s Potala Palace. The morning prayer ceremonies here are a surreal experience—if you can wake up early enough to catch them.
