Step back in time: 5 must-visit heritage sites in Gujarat

Gujarat, a land with great history and culture, also houses some stunning heritage sites. Visitors will find a diverse variety of heritage sites from the intricately carved stepwells and temples, architectural marvels to archaeological wonders. The heritage sites of Gujarat are so beautiful and hold great importance in the spiritual and political history of Gujarat, making them timeless treasures worth exploring for generations to come.

Rani Ki Vav, Patan

Want to know a surprising fact? The Rani Ki Vav stepwell is featured on the ₹100 banknote on the reverse of the note since 2018.
Rani Ki Vav, also known as ‘Queen’s Stepwell,’ is located in Patan and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered one of the finest examples of stepwell architecture in India. This was built in the 11th century by Queen Udayamati as a memorial to her husband King Bhima I. The stepwell consists of seven levels of stairs which lead down to the well. Here, visitors will find 500 major sculptures and some minor sculptures which depict Hindu deities and religious motifs. The architecture of Rani Ki Vav reflects the Maru Gurjara style. The stepwell is designed in the way of an underground shrine or inverted temple which depicts the sacredness of the water.

Sun Temple, Modhera

The Sun Temple of Modhera, a Hindu temple, is dedicated to the solar deity Surya and is located in the Mehsana district of Gujarat. This is not an active worship temple but is a protected monument which has beautifully carved exteriors. The Sun Temple was constructed in the Maru Gurjara style and consists of three main parts: the Gudhamandapa (main temple), the Sabhamandapa (assembly hall), and the Kunda or pond, known as the Surya Kund. An annual three-day festival is held here which is known as Uttarardha Mahotsav during the third week of January, and visitors must definitely visit here during this time to know about the cultural heritage and the classical dance forms of India.

Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat. This park consists of different monuments that hold historical, archaeological, and cultural importance as a heritage site. Visitors will find the Kalika Mata temple, a hill fortress, palaces, mosques, temples, and water installations that date back to the 8th and the 14th centuries. It is unique for its blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles which can be seen in the Palace of Mahmud Begada, Jama Masjid, and fortifications on the Pavagadh hill. This site offers great panoramic views, scenic paths, and attracts millions of Muslims as well as Hindu devotees.

Lothal

One of the southernmost sites of the Indus Valley Civilization, which is located in the Bhal region of Gujarat. Lothal was a vital trade center in ancient times with the trade of beads, gems, and more according to the excavations. It is a well-planned city with warehouses, a drainage system, and a bead factory. Visitors should definitely visit here to get a glimpse of the planning of ancient civilizations. This site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, which has excavated various artefacts from the place.

Dwarkadhish Temple, Dwarka

Also known as the Jagat Mandir, the Dwarkadhish Temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Krishna, who is known as Dwarkadhish or King of Dwarka. This is one of the popular pilgrimage destinations of Chardham. It is considered that the temple was built in 200 BCE at the earliest. The Dwarkadhish Temple is an architectural marvel with a high spire and has intricate carvings and frescoes. This temple attracts a great number of devotees and is a major center of religious activities for Hindus. The temple’s location on the seashore and its spiritual significance make it a major heritage and pilgrimage destination.
