Revealed! The world’s only four green sand beaches

Imagine a beach where the sand shimmers not in the usual shades of gold, white, or black, but in a striking, rare green. This extraordinary phenomenon exists in just four places on Earth, where unique geological processes have crafted a spectacle unlike any other. These green sand beaches owe their vibrant hue to olivine, a mineral born from volcanic activity, rich in magnesium and iron, that resists being swept away by the sea due to its density.

These four locations stand alone as the world’s only green sand beaches, each a testament to Earth’s dynamic geology.

Papakōlea Beach, Hawaii, USA

Nestled near South Point in the Kaʻū district of Hawaii’s Big Island, Papakōlea Beach is also known as Green Sand Beach, and its popularity is mindboggling. Its olive-green sand comes from the erosion of a tuff ring, Puʻu Mahana, formed over 49,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. To reach this beach, one has to hike a 2.7-mile trail across rugged terrain.

3/5

Talofofo Beach, Guam

On the southeastern coast of Guam, a U.S. territory in Micronesia, Talofofo Beach boasts a subtler green tint, most noticeable on clear, sunny days. Flanked by limestone cliffs that serve as nesting sites for seabirds, this beach is a haven for surfers and nature lovers.

4/5

Punta Cormorant, Floreana Island, Galápagos, Ecuador

Located on Floreana Island in the Galápagos archipelago, Punta Cormorant features a beach with a delicate greenish-gold sheen. The olivine here originates from nearby volcanic tuff cones, eroded over time and blended with the fine, flour-like sand. This remote shore, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a sanctuary for wildlife—think sea turtles, stingrays, and flamingos.

5/5

Hornindalsvatnet, Norway

Unlike its tropical counterparts, Hornindalsvatnet in Norway isn’t a traditional ocean beach but the shoreline of Europe’s deepest lake, reaching depths of nearly 400 meters. Its green sand results from a mix of olivine and glacial sediment. This beach is surrounded by rugged mountains and fjord-like waters.
