One day sightseeing in Kanyakumari: 5 places to cover

Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India, boasts many famous spots to witness both sunrise and sunset over the sea. Known as “The Land’s End,” it blends spiritual heritage with natural beauty, from the Kumari Amman Temple and Vivekananda Rock Memorial to pristine beaches and dramatic coastlines.

Let’s take a look at places you can visit here in a day:

2/6

Vivekananda Rock Memorial

A famous monument and a popular tourist spot in Kanyakumari. According to legends, it was on this rock that Goddess Kanyakumari (Parvathi) performed tapas in devotion to Lord Shiva. This rock memorial commemorates Swami Vivekananda, who is believed to have attained enlightenment after meditating on this rock. The memorial comprises two main structures: the Vivekananda Mandapam and the Shripada Mandapam, with architectural styles blending elements from across India. Around the rock, one will witness beautiful scenery as it is surrounded by the Laccadive Sea, where the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea converge.

3/6

Thiruvalluvar Statue

A 42-metre tall sculpture of the Tamil poet and philosopher known as Valluvar or Thiruvalluvar. This statue is located on top of a small island and was sculpted by Indian sculptor V. Ganapati Sthapati. The Thiruvalluvar statue is currently the 25th tallest statue in India and has also been declared the ‘Statue of Wisdom’ by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The statue celebrates the moral and philosophical teachings of Thiruvalluvar and is an iconic landmark visible from the shore. The statue holds great cultural importance and complements the spiritual aura of Kanyakumari.

4/6

Kumari Amman Temple

One of the most popular places to visit here, it is a famous and beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Kanyakumari, who is a virgin goddess and considered to be around 3000 years old. Legends suggest that the goddess protects the shore and its people. Also one of the 108 Shakti Peethas, the Kumari Amman Temple is a must-visit for all tourists and devotees and holds great historical and religious significance. The idol of the goddess inside the temple has a diamond nose ring, which is quite remarkable and is associated with many legends.

5/6

Kanyakumari Beach

Located at the southernmost coast, Kanyakumari Beach is where one can witness the spectacular confluence of three major water bodies—the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea. One can also see the breathtaking Vivekananda Rock Memorial from the beach, as well as the Thiruvalluvar statue nearby. This is a pristine beach where one can spend some peaceful time, and it is a must-visit site for everyone.

6/6

Gandhi Memorial Mandapam

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial is located on the shores of Kanyakumari and was built in honour of Mahatma Gandhi, who is known as the Father of the Nation. Also known as Gandhi Mandapam, this is one of the spots where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were kept in Kanyakumari before immersion and has now been built for the public so that they can pay homage to the man who fought for our independence. The surrounding view is absolutely stunning, and one can witness it from the top of the memorial.
