Old-School India: 6 places that are pure vintage vibes

Ever wished you could step into a postcard from your grandparents’ era, complete with vintage charm, analog vibes, and that peculiar smell of old books and filter coffee? Welcome to places in India that exude the old-school vibe, and are like spots allowing you to step back in time, and experience a slower, cooler, more sepia-toned version of the present.

2/7

Puducherry

Have you been to this place yet? If not yet, plan one to enjoy those lovely moments in this sleepy town. French windows? Check. Bicycles with baskets? Double check. Roam the pastel boulevards of the French Quarter, and you'll feel like you’ve teleported into a vintage postcard with baguettes and bhajis living in perfect harmony.

3/7

Landour, Uttarakhand

Just above Mussoorie, Landour is that quiet alternative for all those who want to get away from the crowds. Its retro charm lies in ivy-covered cottages, winding forest trails, and bakeries with names like “Char Dukan” that serve ginger lemon tea and cinnamon buns. Add in old-school church bells and zero cellphone reception in certain spots, Landour in short is stepping into a romantic novel, with mountain views.

4/7

Chettinad, Tamil Nadu

If you like your retro with a side of grandeur, Chettinad is your go-to place. This sleepy cluster of villages is dotted with mansions, complete with hand-painted tiles, antique teak furniture, and echoes of old Tamil aristocracy. Bonus points for its iconic spicy cuisine that still follows recipes written before independence (probably on palm leaves).

5/7

Siddhpur, Gujarat

Sidhpur is India’s lesser-known pastel paradise. Once a bustling trading town for Dawoodi Bohras, it’s now a cinematic sprawl of empty, Art Deco mansions with Italian tiles and stained glass windows, waiting to be rediscovered. Walking through these forgotten lanes feels like being on a vintage film set that’s too cool to care if it's out of fashion.

6/7

Fort Kochi, Kerala

Fort Kochi is where the Portuguese left their footprint, and curious travellers now come to get inspired. Think spice markets, colonial bungalows, vintage bookstores, and cafés playing old songs. The vibe? Old-school, slow, soulful—and often smelling faintly of cinnamon and sea.

7/7

Chandni Chowk, Delhi

Yes, it’s wild. Yes, it’s crowded. But look closely and Chandni Chowk is basically time travel with butter chicken on the side. Rickshaws jostle for space with fabric merchants and jalebi vendors. Ancient havelis peek out behind tangled wires. And in between the honks, you might just feel transported to some other era, or some Mughal courtyards.
So there you have it, six places where modernity tries to seep in, but unable to still blend in. From sleepy hill towns to spice-scented alleyways, old-school India still has a vibe so classic that you will miss it in the metros.
