Monsoon alert: 7 places in India currently experiencing heavy rainfall

As of May 2025, a number of places in India are transitioning into the monsoon season. Several parts of the country are already facing intense rainfall while some are experiencing early monsoons breaking records of years. These downpours have not only caused major disruptions or waterlogging but have also completely disturbed daily lives of people.
A quick look at seven regions in India experiencing a heavy rainfall as of late May 2025.

2/8

Mumbai, Maharashtra

Mumbai rains always make the news! The city is experiencing an early monsoon and has broken records of years. May 26 marked one of its wettest days in over a century! The city recorded nearly 300 mm of rain within 24 hours, breaking previous records and causing chaos on the streets and underground metro stations were flooded causing major safety concerns.

3/8

Kerala

Kerala is among the first states to receive the southwest monsoon. As of the last week of May, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts in multiple districts including Ernakulam, Idukki, and Kozhikode. Rivers are swelling, landslide risks have increased in the hilly regions, and educational institutions in some areas have been closed as a precaution.

4/8

Hulikal, Karnataka

Often referred to as the "Cherrapunji of South India," Hulikal in Karnataka is known for its record-setting rainfalls, and this year is no exception. Nestled in the Western Ghats, the village has been receiving continuous rainfall since mid-May. The lush greenery of the region is thriving, but the intensity of the rain has led to concerns over possible landslides and road blockages.

5/8

Andhra Pradesh

Several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, and East Godavari, are experiencing heavy pre-monsoon showers. Triggered by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, these rains have been accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. In Visakhapatnam, the downpours caused flooding in low-lying areas and led to temporary power outages.

6/8

Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

Known for its misty hills and frequent rain, Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya are currently facing heavy monsoon showers. With rivers running high and reports of minor landslides in the East Khasi Hills, the state has ramped up emergency response measures. Tourists visiting popular sites like Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong are advised to travel with caution.

7/8

Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu

Although Tamil Nadu usually receives most of its rain during the northeast monsoon, Ramanathapuram has been hit by unseasonal showers. The region experienced a rare cloudburst in late May, inundating the town and nearby coastal areas. While rainfall intensity has slightly decreased, local authorities remain cautious due to saturated ground and the possibility of flash floods.

8/8

Kolkata, West Bengal

Kolkata is also experiencing thunderstorms and rains these days, giving people the much needed relief from heat. The city has already witnessed pre-monsoon showers that flooded streets and affected daily commutes. Civic authorities are working overtime to clean stormwater drains and clear canals to prevent prolonged waterlogging. With heavier rain forecast for the coming days, preparations are underway to minimize disruptions during peak hours.
