International Yoga Day 2025: Rishikesh's 6 famous ashrams for Yoga enthusiasts

Yoga refers to unifying the relationship between the body, mind, and soul. And if there is one place in the world that breathes yoga through every sunrise, it is Rishikesh. Known as the Yoga Capital of the World, this holy town was where sages meditated long ago. Yoga in Rishikesh is not only practiced but lived. Here are six of the most popular ashrams in Rishikesh that continue to change hundreds of lives through yoga every day.

2/7

Parmarth Niketan

Located along the sacred Ganges River, Parmarth Niketan is one of India's most famous ashrams, with more than 1,000 rooms on an eight-acre campus. The ashram provides a peaceful atmosphere for meditation and yoga, where travelers can reside up to 15 days to learn from masters. The ashram organizes the International Yoga Festival every year and provides programs based on Vedic heritage, yoga, and spirituality. Guests can engage in morning and evening yoga and meditation classes, listen to lectures on spirituality, and have Ayurvedic spa treatments.

3/7

Sivananda Ashram

Dubbed the 'Divine Life Society,' Sivananda Ashram is devoted to Swami Sivananda, focused on yoga, Hinduism, and Vedanta. It provides daily yoga classes, with men practicing in the mornings and women in the evenings, in addition to courses such as a popular two-month course. Meditation, pranayama, and Iyengar Yoga are taught, with an emphasis on Indian philosophy through Vedic studies. It's a leading destination for wellness retreats, spiritual education, and a lifestyle surrounded by yoga.

4/7

Omkarananda Ganga Sadan

Situated on the banks of the Ganga River, Omkarananda Ganga Sadan provides a heavenly spiritual experience. Yoga classes are conducted every day except Sunday, with intensive courses being offered through advance booking. The ashram has lectures on the Bhagavad Gita and receives guests for learning about Shri Paramahamsa Omkarananda Saraswati. Guests can practice yoga, take part in aarti at the river ghat, take part in satsangs, and indulge in cultural, educational, and social learning.

5/7

Yoga Niketan

Stretched over 7 acres, Yoga Niketan is a peaceful setting to feel the integration of body, mind, and spirit. It has courses for all eight limbs of Patanjali Yoga and has more than 100 rooms for students. The visitors are welcome for daily yoga classes, satsangs in the evenings, shopping at local markets, and relishing the traditional vegetarian cuisine. Traditional hatha yoga and therapies are the focus of the center, with Ayurvedic spa and acupressure being additional services.

6/7

Sadhana Mandir

The "village of spiritual seekers," Sadhana Mandir, maintains 5,000-year-old Himalayan yogic and meditative traditions. It provides scientifically based methods of yogic meditation. One may sign up for weekend retreats, take part in self-transformation programs, or indulge in guided silent retreats. The spiritual practices of the ashram are directed towards physical, pranic, mental, and spiritual ecstasy. The ambience makes it an important center for yogis and meditators.

7/7

Phool Chatti

Renowned for its peaceful climate, Phool Chatti deals with seven-day yoga and meditation courses. Its name, "Land of Flowers," signifies its peaceful climate. It provides yoga classes, meditation, chanting, cleansing, and silent practices, dealing with all eight yoga disciplines, particularly Hatha and Ashtanga. Rituals such as havan and spiritual ceremonies involve the participants, leading to enlightenment. The purity and simplicity of the environment lead to spiritual awakening, combining traditional practices with modern comforts.
