India’s 5 largest tiger reserves for best chances of tiger spotting

Planning a wildlife trip follows one golden rule and that is keeping that camera charged, or risk losing the moment a tiger strolls into view. Our imagination immediately serves up a Bengal tiger, stealthily padding through tall grass with golden eyes locked on something unseen. But reality and imagination always don’t match perfectly.

Tigers heaven!

However, if you want to keep your chances high, it’s best if you keep the largest tiger reserves in your wildlife itinerary. If this idea excites you, here are India’s five largest tiger reserves where the roar carries far and wide.

3/7

Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana (3,728 sq km)

Imagine a reserve so large it straddles two states, has a mighty river slicing through it, and has an ancient temple too. That’s Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam for you, the largest tiger reserve in India. Nestled in the Nallamala Hills, it’s not just tiger territory but also home to leopards, sloth bears, and hundreds of bird species that treat the Krishna River as their personal watering hole. And if your soul leans spiritual after your wild encounters, you can plan a visit to the centuries-old Srisailam temple that sits inside. And with more than 58 tigers calling it home, this reserve might prove to be your lucky place to spot one in the wild.

4/7

Similipal Tiger Reserve, Odisha (2,750 sq km)

Similipal, carpeted with lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and red blooms of the Simul tree, makes this Eastern Ghats giant a pure jungle spot to visit. Alongside its tigers, Similipal shelters elephants, gaurs, and more than 1,076 plant species. The Khairi river flows through its landscape, while ancient tribal communities live in harmony with the forest. It’s the kind of place where you feel time itself slows down, until, of course, you hear that sudden rustle in the bushes.

5/7

Amrabad Tiger Reserve, Telangana (2,611 sq km)

Once it was part of Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam, which decided to go solo after Telangana’s statehood. Spanning the Nallamala Hills, this reserve is a mix of dry and moist deciduous forests that make tiger-spotting here a true jungle treasure hunt. Amrabad is also home to the Chenchu tribe, one of the oldest forest-dwelling communities in India, who live as custodians of this wild land. With more than 20 tigers roaming its slopes and valleys, Amrabad is not just about wildlife, but also about people whose lives are deeply entwined with the forest.

6/7

Kawal Tiger Reserve, Telangana (2,015.44 sq km)

Head north in Telangana and you’ll bump into Kawal, a reserve that’s part of the great Eastern Ghats tiger corridor. Dry deciduous forests, rocky hills, and the occasional glimpse of Indian bison (gaur) marching through the trees is also a sight to behold. As per the records, there are more than 20 tigers roaming here, along with leopards and sloth bears. Kawal’s importance goes beyond its numbers, as it acts as a critical stepping stone for tiger movement between central and southern India.

7/7

Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh (1,985.23 sq km)

Welcome to Namdapha, where the Himalayas meet tropical forests in a mind-bending mash-up of ecosystems. This reserve doesn’t just stretch wide, it stretches high - from lush valleys to snow-dusted peaks. Tigers share space here with snow leopards (talk about a catwalk) and the rare Hoolock gibbon, India’s only ape. While tiger sightings here are rare (one was recorded after a long gap), Namdapha’s magic lies in its sheer biodiversity and dreamlike remoteness. It’s less a safari and more of an adventure in wilderness and wonder, mystery, and majesty untamed and eternal.
