Indian states where the music scene hits different

Indian states where the music scene hits different

India’s music scene isn’t just about Bollywood playback and Carnatic jugalbandis—it's a mix of so many genres that includes folk traditions to thriving underground scenes. Sure, some of the popular states often hog the mic, but here are some of the places that you should definitely visit that are crushing it musically.

2/7

West Bengal

This state is basically a mixtape of India’s musical soul. On one side, you’ve got the soul-stirring Baul singers—wandering minstrels with ektaras and philosophical verses. Then there’s Bhatiyali, which are those songs sung by boatmen while rowing down the rivers, and devotional Kirtans sung with emotion. Also, you can’t miss the electric energy of Kolkata’s Bangla rock scene—bands like Cactus and Fossils have given the youth guitars with grit and lyrics that punch.

3/7

Karnataka

It’s one of the pillars of Carnatic classical music, with legends like Mysore T. Chowdiah and R.K. Srikantan. But Karnataka also moonlights as an alt-rock and metal haven, especially in Bengaluru. India’s pub capital doubles as the moshpit capital, with bands like Thermal and a Quarter and a thriving indie/electronic scene.

4/7

Rajasthan

Yes, it’s all palaces and camels—but Rajasthan’s music scene is pure royalty. From the hypnotic rhythms of Manganiyar and Langa communities to the infectious energy of Kalbeliya dancers, options are endless. What’s surprising? How this music’s gone global. Folk-fusion acts like Mame Khan and The Rajasthan Express are rocking international stages while keeping the soul intact.

5/7

Assam

Assam’s musical heartbeat is Bihu—joyful, percussive, and utterly infectious. But if you peel back another layer, you’ll find an experimental edge: Assamese metal bands, traditional instrument revivalists, and electronic producers are all thriving.

6/7

Gujarat

Yes, Garba and Dandiya Raas define the musical rhythm of Gujarat. However, the state has also become a place of booming folk-pop crossover movement and an underrated Sufi music scene, especially around Kutch. Modern Gujarati film scores also experiment boldly, and there’s a slowly simmering indie scene in cities like Ahmedabad and Surat.

7/7

Manipur

Manipuri folk music is both devotional and deeply theatrical—think Lai Haraoba rituals and the Pena, an ancient bowed instrument. But here is a surprise: Manipur also has a strong punk and metal subculture.
