How to beat heatwave: 5 Himalayan towns in India where summer is pleasant

As the heat wave continues to affect vast areas of north and central India, travellers are seeking out places where the weather is cooler, mornings are foggy, and a light jacket is needed in the evening. While famous hill stations tend to get quite busy in the summertime, there are other, lesser-known places in North India where the climate is more comfortable, along with forest walks, valley tours, and relaxed travel experience.

2/6

Tirthan Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Nestled in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, Tirthan Valley has proven itself as one of the top options for escaping from crowded Shimla and Manali. The area takes its name from a clean water-filled river, Tirthan River, and is famous for having pleasant temperatures, pine forests, trout fishing, wooden huts, and proximity to the Great Himalayan National Park.

3/6

Munsiyari, Uttarakhand

Situated in the Kumaon range of Uttarakhand, Munsiyari is among the most spectacular hill towns in North India. The cool climate even at the peak of summer makes the town a wonderful destination for travellers who prefer mountain views sans hordes of tourists. Exploring forest trails, viewing glaciers, bird watching and the rich Himalayan culture make the area a delightful escape from the heat wave currently gripping the plains of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

4/6

Chitkul, Himachal Pradesh

Known popularly as the last village in India close to the Indo-Tibet border, Chitkul in the Kinnaur district turns out to be a totally new world in the summer season. While snow clings to the mountains that surround the area, the rest of North India battles the oppressive heat that rises above 45°C. Chitkul with its river, wooden houses, alpine scenery and cool evenings presents a refreshing summer destination in the Himalayas.

5/6

Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir

Although Srinagar receives most of the tourist interest, Pahalgam is one of Kashmir’s most laid-back summer destinations. Nestled amidst the beauty of pine trees, rivers, and lush greenery, the area enjoys comfortable day-time temperature and chilling nights during the summertime. Tourists could visit the valley of Lidder along with Aru or Betwa valleys, besides other activities that could include indulging in alpine ambiance. The place provides one of the coolest climes in India for visitors.

6/6

Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh

Kalpa, a quaint village in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district, enjoys a blend of Himalayan landscape, serene village environment, and cool climate. Famous for Kinnaur Kailash peaks, Kalpa still remains relatively uncrowded in comparison to other popular hill stations. Summertime days remain cool and fresh, mornings feel crisp, while evening temperatures turn out to be chilling due to the intense heat prevailing in the surrounding areas. Kalpa serves as an excellent option for travellers seeking solace from North India’s heatwave conditions.
