From coffin shops to death cafés: 5 macabre travel destinations around the world

What is your idea of curious travel? Well, while many might feel uncomfortable with the thought of sipping coffee surrounded by skull, or taking a selfie in a catacomb, there are many who are curious to explore them. If you also find yourself in the later category, you're not alone. Dark tourism — where morbid meets the mildly amusing — is booming. While some seek sun and sand, others chase the chills of the afterlife, and frankly, it’s never been more... deadly exciting.
So, here are 5 macabre travel stops around the world that promise goosebumps, weird conversations, and probably a few nightmares. Let’s find out.

2/6

Death Café, Tokyo, Japan

You haven’t truly pondered existence until you’ve done so over a matcha latte surrounded by coffin art and conversations about death. At Tokyo’s Death Café, patrons gather not to mourn, but to talk — openly and honestly — about death, dying, and everything in between. It's less creepy than you’d think and oddly comforting. Bonus: They serve skull-shaped cookies. Because why not?

3/6

Coffin Street, Accra, Ghana

In the Ghanaian capital, death gets a designer touch. On Accra's infamous Coffin Street, funerals are fashion shows of the afterlife. Want a coffin shaped like a Mercedes-Benz? A giant fish? A sneaker? You got it. These “fantasy coffins” are handcrafted and customized to reflect the personality (or profession) of the dearly departed. Dead serious: it’s a tourist attraction and a cultural marvel all rolled into one.

4/6

Sedlec Ossuary, Kutná Hora, Czech Republic

Nicknamed the “Bone Church,” this Gothic chapel is decorated with the remains of over 40,000 humans. We’re talking chandeliers made of femurs, skull garlands, and bone pyramids. Located beneath a quiet church in a sleepy Czech town, it’s equal parts eerie and oddly elegant.

5/6

Capuchin Catacombs, Palermo, Italy

Step inside the Capuchin Catacombs and you’ll find over 8,000 preserved bodies — many dressed to impress. Some are monks. Some are children. One is a perfectly mummified two-year-old girl who still has eyelashes. Yep. Welcome to Sicily’s ultimate creepy-crawly heritage site. People travel from all over the world to meet the dead who just won’t fade away.

6/6

Merry Cemetery, Săpânța, Romania

Most cemeteries whisper. This one laughs out loud. In the quirky village of Săpânța, the Merry Cemetery is filled with brightly painted wooden crosses that include poems — many hilariously honest — about the lives (and sometimes deaths) of the deceased. One grave reads: “Under this heavy cross lies my mother-in-law. Try not to wake her up.” Dark humor is clearly alive and well here.
So, the next time you're planning a trip, skip the ordinary. Take a walk on the dark side — the experience is next level!
