Diwali here is pure beauty! Temples and Ghats that light up like heavens during Diwali

Diwali is one of the most beautiful festivals of India. With numerous lights illuminating each and every home of the country, the festival transforms it into a paradise of beauty and light. From ancient ghats to magnificent temples, the night sky comes alive with countless diyas, creating a mesmerising spectacle. Here are eight prominent places where Diwali celebrations shine the brightest and attract devotees from across the world.

Ram Ki Paidi, Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh

Ayodhya's Ram Ki Paidi ghat becomes the epicenter of Diwali festivities. In 2025, the city aimed to set a new world record by lighting 28 lakh (2.8 million) diyas along the Saryu River, with Ram Ki Paidi alone hosting 15-16 lakh lamps. The reflection of thousands of lamps on the river creates a magical glow, while devotional songs and chants add to the spiritual aura, making it one of the most spectacular Diwali destinations.

Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Varanasi's Dashashwamedh Ghat comes alive during Dev Deepawali, celebrated fifteen days after Diwali. Over 10 lakh diyas are lit on the ghats, casting shimmering reflections on the holy Ganges. The entire ghat area resonates with devotional music, ceremonial rituals, and the rhythmic beating of drums, creating an enchanting spiritual experience that draws both pilgrims and tourists from around the world.

4/9

Golden Temple, Amritsar, Punjab

The Golden Temple sparkles like a jewel during Diwali, with thousands of diyas and fairy lights illuminating the shrine and its surroundings. The reflection of the lit temple in the holy Amrit Sarovar adds a breathtaking dimension, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Devotees from across India and abroad gather here to offer prayers, witness fireworks, and experience the harmonious blend of celebration and devotion.

5/9

Somnath Temple, Gujarat

Somnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, becomes a spectacular sight during Diwali. The temple complex is illuminated with thousands of diyas, creating a radiant glow against the night sky. The festival is marked by special aartis, prayers, and cultural programs, making it a spiritual and visually captivating experience for pilgrims and visitors alike.

6/9

Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar, Uttarakhand

On the night of Diwali, Har Ki Pauri becomes a bright fairy-tale. The thousands of followers light up diyas in the river Ganga and make a river of lights which seems to unite heaven and earth. The calm environment that is enhanced by the sound of temple bells, chants, and smell of incense makes the experience extremely spiritual and memorable to visitors of this sacred period.

7/9

Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh

Vrindavan Diwali and Govardhan Puja are observed together and the Banke Bihari Temple is lit up with lamps, flowers and other festive lights. The courtyard of the temple is filled with worship with people coming in to present prayers and sweets to Lord Krishna. The whole evening is dedicated to pious singing, rituals and a vast feeling of happiness and is one of the most delightful Diwali celebrations in India.

8/9

Meenakshi Temple, Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Diwali is celebrated by Meenakshi Temple in Madurai where its elaborate gopurams (towers) are filled with colourful lights and decorations. Floating diyas fill the tank surrounding the temple and cause reflection that enhances the magnificence of the celebration. The light is accompanied by cultural programs, music and special poojas which intertwine the South Indian tradition with a festive mood, which appeals to both the devotees and tourists.

9/9

Laxmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir), Delhi

The most magnificent spectacle on Diwali is Birla Mandir in Delhi where thousands of lamps are lit up to light up its marble walls. Devotees flock the temple and pray to goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu to have a prosperous and peaceful life. It is one of the main centres of the Diwali celebrations in the capital with a large number of devotional music, flower decoration and a vibrant festival mood inside the temple premises.
