‘Dalits’ enter Gidheshwar Shiv Temple after 300 years: Few other temples that broke the shackles

Justice has been served; though delayed but it’s never too late! In a historic moment, the long-standing caste-based discrimination case in Gidheshwar Shiv Temple was finally decided in the favour of Dalits.

Situated in Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal, the Shiva temple saw a history-changing scene on Wednesday when 130-Dalit families, mostly Das community, entered the temple premises and offered prayers to the presiding deity after nearly 300 years!
The bold step broke centuries-old societal norms but it wasn’t an easy thing to achieve. This milestone followed a period of struggle, where the ‘Das’ families, mostly linked with cobbling and weaving, were prohibited from entering the temple because of their caste.
Let’s have a look at some of the temples that broke the societal shackles:

2/5

Jagannath Temple, Puri, Odisha

Jagannath Temple in Puri is one of the Char Dham temples in India and holds immense religious significance. The temple is noted for its history, architecture, rituals and annual Rath Yatra. But among all, the temple is praised for its ani-discrimantion practices. Dalits and other Hindu castes are allowed to enter the temple and partake in the rituals and festivities.

Gidheshwar Shiva Temple, West Bengal

The Gidheshwar Shiva temple in West Bengal is said to be over 200 years old. Locally known as the Shiva Temple, it is located 15 km south of Jamui and set on top of boulders. As per local legends, it is the same site where the epic battle between Ravana and Jatayu took place. This is why the temple holds immense religious importance and attracts devotees from all over, especially during Shivratri and Magh Purnima.

4/5

Beereshwara Temple, Karnataka

In 2024, Dalits were once again allowed to enter the temple after years of struggle. After months of discussions among all caste groups, a decision was taken in the favour of Dalits and they were granted entry inside the temple. This breakthrough marks a significant step toward caste inclusivity and equality in religious spaces.

5/5

Thenmudiyanur Temple, Tamil Nadu

After many years of struggle, Dalits were granted entry to the temple in January 2023 after 80 years. Though higher-caste Hindus boycotted the temple and constructed a new one. But Dalits were allowed inside the main temple.
