9 best places in India to spot crocodiles sunbathing

India’s rivers, estuaries, and wetlands are home to some of the most fascinating reptiles on the planet. One among them is the crocodile, with scaly skin, and are known as the apex predators. India is home to three species of crocodiles, which are the saltwater crocodile (the largest living reptile), the mugger crocodile (a freshwater species widely distributed across India), and the critically endangered gharial, famous for its slender snout. For wildlife enthusiasts, spotting these ancient predators in their natural habitat is nothing short of thrilling. Here are some of the best places in the country where spotting crocodiles in their natural habitat still reign supreme, offering unforgettable encounters with nature and wilderness, a true treat for explorers.

2/10

Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha

Often dubbed the "crocodile capital of India," this place is home to the largest population of saltwater crocodiles outside Australia. This means, chances of spotting one in their natural habitat is also high. Reasons these species are found here in large numbers are also many, such as mangrove swamps, tidal rivers, and creeks, thereby providing an ideal backdrop to witness these giants basking on mudflats or gliding silently through brackish waters.

3/10

National Chambal Sanctuary, Uttar Pradesh–Madhya Pradesh–Rajasthan

This tri-state sanctuary serves as one of the prominent strongholds of the gharial. The Chambal River’s clean waters not only serves as an ideal habitat for gharials, but also for muggers and freshwater turtles. Do note that it also serves as a prominent habitat for these critically endangered species. To spot one, boat safaris are available here that offer close encounters with gharials sunning along sandy riverbanks.

4/10

Sunderbans National Park, West Bengal

Also this place is famed for the famous Bengal tigers, it also serves as home to a thriving saltwater crocodile population. These apex predators also share the tidal creeks with other species like fishing cats, sharks, and migratory birds, making every boat ride an adventure to remember.

5/10

Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary, Odisha

It’s one of the well-known sites for crocodile conservation, especially the gharial. Not only this, the Satkosia Gorge is also one of the most scenic crocodile habitats in India. Home to both muggers and gharials, make sure the camera is fully charged. Its wide river stretches and sandy banks further provide excellent opportunities for spotting crocodiles basking in the sun.

6/10

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, Karnataka

This small sanctuary on the Cauvery River is a birdwatcher’s paradise, but it is also known for its thriving mugger crocodile population. Tourists on boat rides often spot these reptiles lazing on islets while painted storks and pelicans nest overhead.

7/10

Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana

The Krishna River flows through this massive reserve, creating perfect conditions for mugger crocodiles. It’s one of those places where these reptiles can often be seen along riverbanks and reservoirs, adding to the wild charm of the tiger reserve.

8/10

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, Andhra Pradesh

Located near Kakinada, this mangrove sanctuary is a haven for estuarine crocodiles. The creeks and estuaries make for ideal habitats, whereas eco-tourism initiatives have made this destination an emerging hotspot for crocodile spotting along India’s east coast.

9/10

Madras Crocodile Bank Trust, Tamil Nadu

Although technically a conservation and research centre rather than a wild reserve, the Crocodile Bank near Chennai deserves mention. Established by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, it houses thousands of crocodiles, including rare species. It’s an excellent spot for education and awareness. It was established in 1978 to conserve the three crocodile species, that is mugger crocodile, gharial, and saltwater crocodile.

10/10

Dudhwa National Park, Uttar Pradesh

Although this place is best known for barasingha and tigers, Dudhwa’s wetlands also serve as home to mugger crocodiles and gharials. The Sharda River and numerous lakes inside the park make it a rewarding destination for reptile enthusiasts.
