8 wildlife destinations in India that are perfect for weekend getaways

Not every weekend has to be about mundane activities, and regrettable online shopping. Sometimes, a quick escape into the wild can do wonders for your city-stressed soul. Luckily, India’s got enough wildlife destinations to swap the regular things and Wi-Fi for wild sightings, all without needing to burn your leaves or book 5 connecting flights. Here are 8 wildlife getaways that are wild enough to thrill but close enough to not kill your weekend.

2/9

Kabini (Karnataka)

A few hours from Bengaluru, Kabini is where elephants are the highlights, and if you are lucky, you get to spot leopards. The backwaters, misty mornings, and stealthy safaris make it for the perfect escape. Also this place is known for black panther sightings.

3/9

Pench National Park (Madhya Pradesh/Maharashtra)

Split between two states, Pench is one of the top national parks that deserves a spot in your wildlife travel wishlist. With teak forests and tiger trails, it’s a surprisingly serene getaway from Nagpur or even Jabalpur. Expect sambars chilling, and the occasional tiger sightings for the thrill.

4/9

Bhitarkanika (Odisha)

If your idea of a good time includes saltwater crocodiles and boat rides through mangrove mazes, Bhitarkanika’s your spot. A few hours from Bhubaneswar, this lesser-known gem is home to India’s largest population of estuarine crocodiles.

5/9

Bera (Rajasthan)

Near Udaipur, Bera flips the usual Rajasthan narrative. No forts or camel rides here, just granite hills, scrublands, and leopards strutting around. The landscape is surreal, and spotting a big cat lounging on a rock at sunset is pure cinematic gold.

6/9

Satpura National Park (Madhya Pradesh)

If you like your forests quiet and tiger-chasing crowds at a distance, Satpura is the laid-back alternative of Bandhavgarh and Kanha. Canoe rides, walking safaris, and sloth bears, it’s intimate, raw, and just about 4-5 hours from Bhopal.

7/9

Tadoba (Maharashtra)

Only a few hours from Nagpur, Tadoba’s where you have a real shot at spotting a tiger. The jungle vibes are intense, and sightings are frequent enough to make your city friends jealous. The lodges range from rustic to fancy, choose your wild style.

8/9

Periyar (Kerala)

This place will give you the vibe of hill station meeting jungle in Thekkady’s Periyar. Take a bamboo raft down the lake, watch elephants bathe, and maybe get a glimpse of a bison or two, all while breathing in cardamom-laced mountain air. This is wildlife the ayurvedic way, sort of.

9/9

Jaldapara (West Bengal)

A short trip from Siliguri or even Jalpaiguri, Jaldapara also makes for a great weekend wildlife. With its lush grasslands and thick sal forests, it’s home to one-horned rhinos, wild elephants, and barking deer, you get it all here. Opt for an early morning elephant safari if you’re feeling adventurous.
