8 ways to experience a different side of Delhi

Delhi offer experiences for every mood that they often seem to be more than one asks for. Together they offer a layered travel experience, where one gets to check out a mix of almost everything like historic monuments, green escapes, cultural hubs, and spaces that can quietly surprise even regular visitors. At one point of time you might be stuck in traffic, and not trusting yourself for taking that route, the next moment you can be exploring vast greenery which is least expected. Not only does centuries-old forts grace Delhi’s landscape, there are bird-filled wetlands and curated urban gardens to keep not only visitors, but also locals hooked. Here are eight places that capture the capital region’s many moods.

2/9

Okhla Bird Sanctuary

If you are a birder and though these places have not much to visit, wait till you visit Okhla Bird Sanctuary, a rare urban wetland where nature will surprise you, against the city backgrounds. Spread across the Yamuna floodplains, it is home to over 300 bird species, especially during winter. Early mornings are best for spotting migratory birds, such as painted storks, pelicans, and various raptors, while the walking trails are best explored for a peaceful break from traffic and noise.

3/9

Hauz Khas Village

If you want to spend a memorable evening with your gang, Hauz Khas is the answer, where medieval history meets contemporary culture. The 13th-century reservoir, tombs, and madrasa ruins overlook a scenic lake, while nearby lanes are packed with cafés, boutiques, and art spaces. It works equally well for a heritage walk, a relaxed brunch, or an evening exploring Delhi’s creative side.

4/9

Delhi Ridge Jungle Trail

Often referred to as the city’s green lungs, the Delhi Ridge lets you breathe easy. It offers jungle trails, and takes you away from the city chaos for a change. Areas around the Central Ridge and North Ridge are popular for nature walks, birdwatching, and quiet hikes. The terrain is raw and largely untouched, making it one of the few places in the capital where dense tree cover and birdsong dominate the soundscape.

5/9

Dilli Haat

It’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Delhi. Dilli Haat offers a curated show of India’s craft and culinary traditions. Artisans from different states put up their stalls, selling handlooms, jewellery, pottery, and folk art. Food stalls serve regional favourites, from momos and litti chokha to dosas and kebabs, thereby offering you multiple experiences under one roof, and allowing you to witness India’s diversity in one place.

6/9

Red Fort

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Red Fort remains one of Delhi’s most powerful symbols. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, its massive red sandstone walls enclose palaces, audience halls, and museums that trace key chapters of Indian history. Visiting early in the day allows time to explore before crowds gather around Chandni Chowk.

7/9

National Science Centre

It's one of the best places to visit for families, where interactive displays and galleries on space, physics, human biology, and emerging technologies play a perfect role to provide answers to curious and inquisitive minds. Interactive displays make complex topics look simple, while outdoor science parks offer a joyful touch to learning, and allows people to understand complex things easily.

8/9

Sunder Nursery

It's definitely one of Delhi’s most thoughtfully restored green spaces. Mughal-era tombs are set amid manicured gardens, water channels, and walking paths. Less crowded than many city parks, it is popular for picnics, photography, and leisurely walks, especially during spring when flowers are in bloom.

9/9

National Zoological Park

Located near Pragati Maidan, the National Zoological Park spans more than 170 acres and houses a wide variety of animal species in relatively open enclosures. Tree-lined paths make it suitable for long walks, and the zoo continues to be a favourite for families and school groups seeking an educational outdoor outing.
