7 places around the world where it’s snowing right now

Snow may seem like a distant dream for those basking in late summer sunshine, or watching the monsoon rains pouring down, but in certain corners of the world, snowfall is happening now, and that too thick and fast. Thanks to opposite seasons in the Southern Hemisphere and high-altitude weather in the Andes, ski towns and alpine resorts are getting transformed into frosted wonderlands as we speak. Here are seven popular destinations where it is snowing right now.

2/8

Las Leñas, Argentina

Another Argentine giant, Las Leñas has also been witnessing snowfall in the past 10–12 hours. Nestled in the Mendoza province, this resort is famous not just for groomed slopes but also for some of the steepest off-piste terrain in the Southern Hemisphere. With new snow blanketing its valleys, adrenaline junkies are finding perfect conditions for freeriding and backcountry adventures.
Records add that the skiing season here usually lasts from mid June to mid October, however, recent seasons have seen it end as early as mid-September. During the southern hemisphere summer, this center remains open for mountain activities like horse riding, mountain biking, climbing, and more.

3/8

Farellones, Chile

Crossing into Chile, Farellones is currently enjoying a fresh snow cover. Located just an hour from Santiago, it is one of the most accessible ski villages in South America. Families flock here for sledding and tubing, but skiers and snowboarders are equally thrilled when snow falls in bursts as it has today. Add in panoramic views of the Andes, and you’ve got a postcard scene.

4/8

Portillo, Chile

A legendary name in the skiing world, Portillo has also been receiving moderate snowfall recently. Situated high in the Andes near the Argentine border, it is one of the oldest ski resorts in South America. The vibrant yellow Portillo Hotel overlooking the snow-capped Laguna del Inca is an iconic sight, now framed by flurries of snow swirling across its slopes.

5/8

Thredbo, Australia

It’s not all about South America, as Australia’s Snowy Mountains are getting their fair share of snow too. Thredbo, in New South Wales, is currently reporting snowfall that has revived its slopes after a long winter season. Skiers are enjoying freshly powdered runs, while the village itself is dressed in a wintery blanket. For Australians, this is as alpine as it gets.

6/8

Falls Creek, Australia

Further south in Victoria, Falls Creek is also under a fresh dusting of snow. Known for its charming alpine village and extensive cross-country ski trails, it is one of Australia’s most popular winter resorts. Reports show snowfall within the past 24 hours, which means families and seasoned skiers alike are making the most of the season’s final snowstorms.

7/8

Volcán Osorno Region, Chile

Perhaps the most dramatic of the list, the area around Volcán Osorno in southern Chile is experiencing snowfall as well. The snow-capped cone of this stratovolcano already resembles Japan’s Mount Fuji, and flurries of fresh snow only enhance its beauty. Skiing on the slopes of an active volcano, with views of Lake Llanquihue below, is an adventure like no other.

8/8

Cerro Catedral, Argentina

Perched near Bariloche in Patagonia, Cerro Catedral is South America’s largest ski resort. As per the latest reports, fresh snow is expected soon, which will add layers to already deep winter coverage. Known for its dramatic peaks resembling cathedral spires, the resort is buzzing with skiers carving through powder. For anyone seeking that quintessential “winter in the Andes” vibe, this is the place.
