7 impressive monuments in North India that tell timeless stories

North India is a treasure trove of history, culture, and architectural brilliance. There are monuments that serve the perfect dose of exploration to a history buff, an Instagram fanatic, or just someone who loves to soak in old-world charm. Also, these monuments are your go-to spots, when every corner of the city feels chaotic. Here, we list some of the popular monuments in North India that truly define history and beauty!

2/8

Taj Mahal, Agra

Constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his cherished Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal is more than a stunning monument. It embodies eternal love, adorned in pristine white marble with exquisite symmetry and detailed inlay work. Visiting at sunrise offers a breathtaking view of its magical glow, with fewer selfie sticks obstructing the experience.

3/8

Qutub Minar, Delhi

The Qutb Minar was constructed atop the ruins of Lal Kot, the ancient citadel of Dhillika. Its construction began shortly after the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. Drawing inspiration from their Ghurid homeland, Qutub-ud-Din Aibak and Shamsu’d-Din Iltutmish built the minaret at the southeastern corner of the mosque between 1199 and 1503. This UNESCO World Heritage in Mahrauli area tells the story of the Delhi Sultanate with its stunning Indo-Islamic architecture. Then there is the Iron Pillar rising above the courtyard, which attracts lots of curious minds for remaining rust-free till date although it was built more than 1600 years ago.

4/8

Amber Fort, Jaipur

This majestic fortress is located in Amer, and is a popular attraction known for its artistic style elements. Amer Palace is a prime example of Rajput architecture, with certain buildings and details showing Mughal influences. Built from red sandstone and marble, this stunning and lavish palace is arranged over four levels, each featuring its own courtyard. Climb up (or take an elephant ride) to this stunning fort that overlooks Maota Lake. With its mirror work and massive gates, it’s pure Rajasthan royalty.

5/8

Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi

Often overshadowed by other popular monuments in Delhi, Humayun’s Tomb is a masterpiece that you need to add in your travel wishlist. The tomb of Humayun was commissioned by his first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum (also known as Haji Begum). Construction started in 1565 and was completed in 1572, costing 1.5 million rupees, entirely funded by the Empress. This garden tomb is a peaceful oasis with perfect Persian-style gardens and grand arches. A quiet place to reflect and to snap some epic photos.

6/8

Red Fort, Delhi

This massive red sandstone fortress is where history and modern India meet. Built by Shah Jahan, it’s a symbol of Mughal power and now hosts India’s Independence Day celebrations. During Nadir Shah's invasion in 1739, the fort was looted and its artwork and jewels were taken. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British demolished many of its marble buildings, though the defensive walls mostly survived. Later, the fort was converted into a military garrison. Don’t miss the evening sound and light show, when you get to witness history coming alive.

7/8

Lotus Temple, Delhi

Not your typical ancient monument, the Lotus Temple is a modern architectural marvel shaped like a blooming lotus flower. It is a Baháʼí House of Worship known for its distinctive lotus flower-like design. It welcomes people from all religions to meditate and chill in its serene halls. Perfect for a peaceful break from the city chaos.

8/8

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

It’s a collection of 19 astronomical instruments and a place where science and history collide. Situated near Hawa Mahal and City Palace, this astronomical observatory with gigantic instruments was designed to track stars and planets. It’s quirky, it’s giant, and it’s one of the few places where you can witness something that looks like an ancient calculator in real life.
