6 unmissable stops that make Chandigarh to Shimla hill tour worthwhile

If there’s one route that blends urban cool, colonial charm, and misty mountain magic in just the right dose, it’s the Chandigarh–Kasauli–Shimla circuit. Whether you’re a first-timer headed for the hills or a seasoned traveller chasing fresh air and slower days, this three-stop trail delivers far more than just pine trees and parathas. From recycled art to ridge-top views, here are six standout spots that make this classic North Indian journey unforgettable.

2/7

Rock Garden, Chandigarh

Your journey kicks off in India’s cleanest city with the coolest story. The Rock Garden, a brainchild of Nek Chand, is a whimsical world that has been made entirely out of waste like broken bangles, tiles, discarded ceramics, and industrial scrap. It's not just a garden, it transports you into an art gallery that comes complemented with waterfalls, corridors, and courtyards full of recycled magic.

3/7

Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh

Just a stone’s throw from the Rock Garden is Sukhna Lake, the calm heart of Chandigarh. Whether you want to paddle a boat, sip chai with a lakeside breeze, or just people-watch with pigeons for company, this man-made lake is one of the city's favourite breathers. Early mornings are for joggers; evenings are for families, and somewhere in between, you’ll find your moment of peace.

4/7

Kasauli Mall Road and Christ Church

Leave behind Chandigarh’s geometry and head into Kasauli’s pine-scented nostalgia. This tiny hill town is like a postcard from the 1800s. Mall Road is short but sweet, dotted with bakeries, souvenir shops, and old-school charm. Don’t miss the Christ Church, built in 1853, with its grey stone façade and whispering deodars. It’s the kind of place where time slows down—and that’s exactly the point.

5/7

Monkey Point, Kasauli

Want a viewpoint with a story, this is the place you should head next. Monkey Point is the highest spot in Kasauli, where legend says Lord Hanuman once set foot. The short hike to the top rewards you with panoramic views and the occasional monkey mischief. Hold on to your snacks, glasses, and, well, your patience too.

6/7

The Ridge and Mall Road, Shimla

Next up is Shimla, the hill queen that will remain our forever favourite and will never go out of style. When you can't think of any place, Shimla seems to be the easy, go-to place for sure. At its heart is The Ridge, a wide-open space where locals, tourists, and history quietly mingle. Nearby Mall Road is where you window-shop, snack, and spot relics of British India in every building. Whether it’s an ice cream in hand or snow underfoot, this part of Shimla always delivers on charm.

7/7

Jakhoo Temple, Shimla

Top off your trip, literally, at Jakhoo Temple, which is situated on Shimla’s highest peak. It’s dedicated to Lord Hanuman, and the 108-ft orange statue is hard to miss (and even harder not to photograph). You can trek up or take the cable car, but beware: the monkeys here have no chill. And once there, you would thank your stars for sure. The view from here will stay with you forever.
