6 fascinating temples in Karnataka that are as epic as they are divine

Karnataka is home to some of the country’s most fascinating temples. There are sky-high Lord Shiva statues gazing at the Arabian Sea to a Lord Krishna idol that you can only peek at through a nine-holed window. These temples are where spirituality meets architectural magnificence. Each of these temples has a story that stretches across centuries, and makes for fascinating places to visit. If you are a believer, a history buff, or just someone looking out for epic places to visit, these temples in Karnataka promise encounters far richer than you’d expect. Find out more here.

2/7

Udupi Srikrishna Temple, Udupi

At the heart of Udupi lies the famed Srikrishna Temple, where Lord Krishna is worshipped in his playful child form, Bal Krishna. Unlike most temples, you can’t just walk up and get a direct glimpse of the idol. Instead, devotees peek at him through a unique nine-holed silver window called the Navagraha Kitiki. Dating back to the 13th century, the temple and its monastery (Matta) attract devotees from across India. Its distinct tradition of darshan sets it apart, adding an air of mystery to the experience of devotion.

3/7

Murudeshwar Shiva Temple, Bhatkal

Perched dramatically on Kanduka Hill, the Murudeshwar Temple is flanked by the Arabian Sea on three sides, making it a temple with a view. The star attraction of this place is undoubtedly the 123-foot statue of Lord Shiva, the second-largest Shiva statue in the world. Equally impressive is the towering 237-foot gopuram, one of India’s tallest, with panoramic elevators that let visitors admire the coastal beauty. Murudeshwar combines devotion with grandeur, making it a must-visit for both pilgrims and travelers chasing scenic thrills.

4/7

Vitthala Temple, Hampi

The Vitthala Temple in Hampi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its stone chariot, which is an architectural marvel that has practically become Hampi’s logo. Another highlight? The musical pillars, which are capable of producing different sounds when tapped. Built with unmatched craftsmanship, the Vitthala Temple reflects the splendor of the Vijayanagara Empire and continues to awe historians, architects, and travelers alike.

5/7

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

Step into Belur’s Chennakeshava Temple and you’ll feel like the walls are talking. Built in the 12th century by King Vishnuvardhana, this temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is famed for its intricate carvings. Each panel is a time capsule, depicting dancers, musicians, and scenes from everyday life in exquisite detail. The artistry is so delicate that it almost feels like lace carved into stone. It’s no surprise that this temple is one of the most visited in Karnataka, offering both devotion and a deep dive into medieval craftsmanship.

6/7

Mallikarjuna Temple, Pattadakal

In the UNESCO heritage town of Pattadakal, where ancient Dravidian and Nagara styles meet, stands the Mallikarjuna Temple. Built in the 7th–8th century and dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is an ode to time-tested devotion. Its walls carry carvings from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and even the Panchatantra, blending mythology with moral tales. This temple isn’t just a place of worship, it’s also a storyteller’s paradise, where stone narrates epics.

7/7

Kotilingeshwara Temple, Kolar

When it comes to scale, Kotilingeshwara Temple in Kolar doesn’t hold back. It houses Asia’s tallest Shiva Lingam, flanked by thousands of smaller lingams scattered across the temple complex. The sight is staggering, especially during Maha Shivratri, when pilgrims gather in large numbers for grand celebrations.
