5 windiest cities in the world and why tourists love visiting them

Some cities are known for their windy conditions due to their geographical location, ocean currents, mountain passes, or open plains. Notably, the same winds that make these cities what they are also contribute to their attractiveness. While wind can be a nuisance, in some cities, it is an added advantage. Wind shapes cliffs and dunes, propels sailing culture, removes pollution, and enhances the scenic view of the ocean. For the adventurous traveler who loves weather and landscapes shaped by natural forces, these cities are a must-visit destination, complete with a punch of wind.

2/6

Wellington in New Zealand

Wellington is frequently named as one of the windiest cities in the world. Its position on the southern tip of the North Island of New Zealand puts it right in the line of powerful westerly winds, which are nicknamed the “Roaring Forties.” The Cook Strait, which divides the North and South Islands, is a wind tunnel that funnels the winds.
Contrary to expectations, Wellington is a cultural hub. The city is known for its waterfront walkway, café scene, and artistic vibe. The city is home to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, which is the national museum of New Zealand. The surrounding hills provide a scenic backdrop, and nearby film studios associated with the Lord of the Rings movies have helped to boost its popularity.

3/6

Chicago in USA

Chicago is famously known as the “Windy City.” Although the name of this city has political roots, it is also prone to strong winds because of its location near Lake Michigan.
The breathtaking skyline of Chicago, which was a result of innovative skyscraper architecture, attracts millions of tourists every year. Millennium Park and the Art Institute of Chicago are some of the prominent attractions of this city. The lakefront trail, river cruises, deep-dish pizza, and the blues music scene make it one of the most lively places in the United States.

4/6

Punta Arenas in Chile

Punta Arenas is situated in southern Chile, close to the Strait of Magellan. This makes it close to Antarctica and susceptible to strong Patagonian winds.
Punta Arenas is a gateway to Patagonia and Antarctica. Travellers use it as a base for exploring dramatic landscapes, glaciers, and wildlife. Penguin colonies, windswept grasslands, and access to Torres del Paine National Park make it a magnet for adventure seekers. The winds add to the wild, untamed character that defines Patagonia.

5/6

Reykjavik in Iceland

The capital of Iceland is prone to strong winds because of its location in the North Atlantic and the influence of low-pressure systems. With so few natural barriers and an oceanic climate, Reykjavik is characterized by constant wind and periodic strong gusts, especially during the winter months.
Reykjavik offers a mix of Nordic ambiance and accessibility to unique natural wonders. Visitors use the city as a starting point for exploring geysers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and the Blue Lagoon. The possibility of witnessing the Northern Lights, combined with colourful houses and a thriving arts scene, makes Reykjavik a favourite among travellers seeking dramatic landscapes.

6/6

Perth in Australia

Perth has a sea breeze every day, which the locals call the “Fremantle Doctor.” The sea breeze occurs when the hot air from the inland areas rises, causing the cool air from the Indian Ocean to blow in. This regular phenomenon makes Perth one of the windiest big cities in Australia.
The city’s windiness makes Perth a great place to engage in sailing, windsurfing, and kite surfing. The city’s beaches, such as Cottesloe Beach, are also great for watching sunsets and engaging in water activities. Perth also provides easy access to Rottnest Island, famous for its quokkas and bike paths.
