5 UNESCO sites that stand out for their extraordinary and unique animal life

When UNESCO designates a World Heritage Site, many are inclined to think more about ancient temples, architectural marvels, or dramatic landscapes. But every place does not follow the same norm, as some sites also make it to the list not for human history, but for the incredible creatures that call them home. Yes, it’s right. From dragons that actually exist to birds that flaunt colors brighter than a painter’s palette, here are some of the popular UNESCO sites where the animals are just as iconic as the scenery.

2/6

Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Most of the people reading this must have done all the regular safari stuff, but this is not about that. Komodo National Park is where one gets to see the dragons in real life. The Komodo dragon, the world’s largest lizard, which can grow up to 3 m long and has a venomous bite strong enough to bring down deer, calls this place home. They roam the rugged volcanic islands, and share their turf with wild boars, buffalo, and vibrant marine life in the surrounding coral reefs. It’s one of the few places on Earth where visitors can feel like they’ve stepped into Jurassic Park.

3/6

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Charles Darwin didn’t stumble upon just any islands, he actually found a living laboratory. The Galápagos are bursting with unique creatures. Lucky ones can spot not just one or two, but a variety of species from marine iguanas that swim like lizards, to giant tortoises that seem centuries old (and some actually are). Then to surprise more, there are blue-footed boobies, penguins living on the equator, and playful sea lions, all in one place.

4/6

Okavango Delta, Botswana

A river that flows into the desert and simply disappears might sound odd, but the Okavango Delta turns this quirk into a miracle. Every year, seasonal floods transform dry land into wetlands, drawing elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and over 400 bird species. It’s one of the best safari destinations in Africa, where spotting wildlife is an experience that every wildlife enthusiast should experience at least once.

5/6

Doñana National Park, Spain

Tucked away in southern Spain, Doñana is a crucial stopover for migratory birds flying between Europe and Africa. It is that special place where flamingos, herons, and spoonbills check in for a seasonal layover. The park is also one of the last refuges for the critically endangered Iberian lynx, a feline so elusive that spotting one feels like winning the wildlife lottery.

6/6

Yellowstone National Park

As the world’s first national park, Yellowstone makes the UNESCO list with good reason. Yes, it has dramatic geysers and hot springs, but it’s also a stronghold for wildlife. Bison herds still roam as they did centuries ago, while grizzly bears, wolves, elk, and bald eagles remind visitors that America’s wilderness is still alive and thriving. Watching Old Faithful erupt while a herd of bison grazes nearby is a uniquely Yellowstone moment.
