The lake is located in the Kollam district and has a unique wetland ecosystem. The Ashtamudi Lake is known as the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is known mainly for its houseboats and backwater resorts. On the banks of the lake and the canals are coconut groves and palm trees, and visitors can also look at towns and villages while on the cruise. Boat cruises are operated by the Kollam Boat Club from Kollam to Alappuzha, providing transport access to many other towns and villages along this route. Luxury houseboats also operate on the lake. It mostly is an 8-hour journey where one cruises through lakes, canals, and water-bound villages.
