5 places that are perfect to visit in May

May is an excellent month to visit different places, as many areas have great weather, enjoyable weather features, and manageable crowds. This makes it easy and relaxing to explore. The cities around the world are flowering, with landscapes bursting with colour after their long, cold winter. These plants provide some of the best travel experiences you will ever have! Whether you are looking for culture, adventure, or rest, you will find the best of all three in May! Here are 5 perfect places to visit in May shared Author: Louis D’Souza, Managing Partner, Tamarind Global.

2/6

Kyoto, Japan

Visiting Kyoto in May is like being in an actual work of art. The cherry blossom season has just passed, but it has now matured beautifully into a rich green tranquility that is still stunning. With its tree-lined avenues, peaceful temples and traditional wooden homes, the city has a wonderful ambiance. The mixture of contemporary cafes and peeks of ancient traditions, such as people in kimonos, adds to the agelessness of Kyoto. When visiting, one can have tranquil moments participating in formal tea ceremonies, strolling through bamboo forests and visiting historic sites such as the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. There is a gentle enchantment in the air that makes every experience you encounter unique and relaxed.

3/6

Switzerland

Visiting Switzerland in May is like being transported into a dream world where two different seasons can be experienced simultaneously. It can feel like an unusual experience to go to Switzerland during May because it looks so amazing as it changes from one season to another, such as snow-topped mountains are still visible and valleys are glowing with colourful blooming tulips and trees at the same time. The Montreux Promenade offers many places for incredible photos and visiting the Morges Tulip Festival is very enjoyable too! The Lavaux Vineyards are beginning to shine in the spring sunlight, while other parts of Switzerland, such as Ticino, have a more Mediterranean feel and are warmer. This is a beautiful country where you can find many relaxing and beautiful places, which make it such a wonderful place to enjoy a break from your regular routine.

4/6

Ladakh, India

Ladakh begins to awaken in May after remaining quiet through the long winter months marked by harsh weather. The surrounding mountains are still blanketed in snow and the air remains crisp, but apricot orchards start bursting into bloom, adding striking colour to the stark landscape. As roads gradually reopen during the month, travellers gain access to iconic spots such as the sand dunes of Nubra Valley and the still partly frozen waters of Pangong Tso. The region retains a calm and serene charm, as the peak tourist rush usually arrives later. Visitors can also explore spiritual landmarks like Hemis Monastery and Thiksey Monastery, offering moments of reflection amid dramatic scenery. Those who travel to Ladakh in May experience its raw beauty in a quieter, more intimate way than during the busier summer and autumn months.

5/6

Rome, Italy

Rome in May is absolutely amazing! The weather is perfect for long walks around the ancient buildings and sights. From the awe of the Colosseum to the quaintness of cobblestone streets in Trastevere, Rome has a lot to offer during May. There are restaurants that have their tables out on the street, there are people everywhere in the piazzas, and the fountains sparkle under warm spring sunlight. When you are in Rome, May is also the perfect time to enjoy the classic Italian food - including fresh pasta, gelato, and long leisurely drinks of espresso - while you take in the classic beauty of the city.

6/6

Istanbul, Turkey

As spring awakens the city of Istanbul during the month of May, it brings about an explosion of colour from tulips throughout Istanbul's parks and gardens. The iconic tulip displays provide a beautiful contrast to the city's ancient skyline. Visitors can also experience the genuine beauty of historical sites such as the Hagia Sophia, an outstanding example of Byzantine architecture, and take peaceful boat tours on the Bosporus River. The population is lower than it is in July and August, so walking around will allow you to truly see the combination of the city's history, culture, and everyday life. In addition, the vibrant streets, filled with cafés, restaurants, and bazaars, contribute to the energetic spirit of Istanbul.
