5 palaces in Jaipur that define royal grandeur

Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, boasts some great architectural marvels that will definitely leave you awe-struck! The palaces located here have great grandeur and are the perfect blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture, providing visitors a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Jaipur, its traditions, and timeless architectural beauty.

Let’s take a heritage tour through Jaipur:

2/6

City Palace

In Jaipur, famously known as the “Pink City,” stands the magnificent City Palace. Once the administrative seat of power, it still serves as the royal family’s residence, with several sections open for public exploration. The palace is an architectural marvel, showcasing a harmonious blend of Mughal and Rajput styles. Its vast courtyards, intricately adorned halls, and sacred temples add to its grandeur. Key attractions within the complex include Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Shri Govind Dev Temple, and the City Palace Museum—each offering a glimpse into Jaipur’s regal heritage. Visitors can also admire fine paintings, portraits of Jaipur’s Maharajas, and an array of ancient artifacts that vividly capture the city’s royal legacy.

3/6

Amer Palace

A UNESCO World Heritage property situated atop a hill covered with greenery, it is a big tourist draw here. Also known as Amber Fort, it's famous for its artistic beauty and the mix of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. It is constructed of red sandstone and marble and contains four various courtyards, including the Diwan-e-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), the mesmerizing Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), Sukh Niwas (Hall of Pleasure), and Ganesh Pol (decorative gate). One can also proceed to the Shila Devi Temple found within the complex. The Amer Fort consists of huge ramparts and a sequence of gates and roads, and the fort overlooks the Maota Lake, adding to the magnificence and beauty of the fort.

4/6

Hawa Mahal

Also known as the ‘Palace of Winds,’ Hawa Mahal is one of Jaipur’s most iconic landmarks. Built from red and pink sandstone, its striking honeycomb façade features 953 jharokhas, or small windows. Designed to resemble Lord Krishna’s crown, this five-storey structure allowed royal ladies to watch street processions and daily life in the bazaars without being seen. Its intricate latticework lets breezes flow through the palace, creating a natural cooling effect—hence the name ‘Hawa Mahal.’ A visit here is a must for history enthusiasts and photography lovers alike.

5/6

Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal, or Water Palace, located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake, used to be a hunting lodge for Maharaja Madho Singh I. It was constructed of pink sandstone in Rajput architectural style. It appears as if it’s just a single-storey fort, but actually has four more levels that are submerged under the water and were constructed with lime mortar that prevents water seepage. Individuals cannot visit the palace but can click some picturesque sunset photos with the lake as a backdrop, which is a magical spectacle and one must definitely witness, as the palace’s sandstone in contrast with the blue of the lake creates a stunning view. The palace and lake area have also become a popular spot for birdwatching and street food.

6/6

Rambagh Palace

The Rambagh Palace was first built as a garden retreat but later became a royal residence of the Maharajas of Jaipur. The Rambagh Palace was the first to be converted into a luxury palace hotel under Taj Hotels. Often known as ‘The Jewel of Jaipur,’ it is quite well known for its Indo-Saracenic architecture along with ornate gardens, and it is also greatly connected to the royal history. The structure is built primarily of pale pink sandstone with marble detailing and features beautiful ornate domes, jali screens, and carved stone balconies. Visitors must definitely visit this palace and stay here for a more immersive experience of the culture and traditions of Jaipur.
