5 palaces and mansions in Hyderabad that speak of royalty

There was a time when the palaces and mansions of royalty weren’t just museums or part of heritage, but were actual living locations. Likewise, Hyderabad, the City of Pearls, is not just famous for its bustling bazaars and rich biryani, it’s also a treasure trove of regal architecture. Scattered across the city are palaces and mansions that once housed Nizams, nobles, and aristocrats, each echoing stories of grandeur, intrigue, and opulence. Exploring them offers a glimpse into Hyderabad’s royal past, revealing tales of power, artistry, and the lavish lifestyles that shaped the city’s unique heritage. Find out more here:

Chowmahalla Palace

The official seat of power and residence of the great Nizams of Hyderabad from the mid-18th century till the end of their reign in 1948. The palace’s name means four palaces, which is a reference to the four grand courtyards inside the complex. Visitors must come here to witness the great architectural details, such as a combination of Mughal and Persian architectural styles, the beautifully preserved halls, and the impressive collection of vintage cars and royal artefacts here, which give a glimpse into the royal grandeur. The oldest part of the palace is the southern courtyard, which consists of four palaces built in a neo-classical style.

3/6

King Kothi Palace

The residence of the great seventh Nizam, ‘Mir Osman Ali Khan.’ The palace name comes from the original owner of the palace, ‘KK’ Kamal Khan, which was combined with ‘kothi,’ which means ‘king’s kothi.’ This palace was a residence of the Nizam throughout his reign until 1967. The palace consists of three buildings, out of which only the main building and the Nazri Bagh survive. Both the surviving buildings are in European style, with arched entrances and intricate woodwork on canopied windows. Visiting King Kothi offers insight into the personal and political life of one of India’s richest rulers, with artefacts that reflect his reign’s historical significance.

Falaknuma Palace

This palace was built in the 19th century by the Paigah family and was later purchased by the Nizams. The location of this palace enhances its beauty, as it is perched on a hill. This palace is designed in Italian and Tudor architectural styles. This palace is mainly famous for its luxury interiors, marble staircases, and lavish furniture. This was the residence of the Nizams and now operates as a luxury hotel. Visitors will get a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Nizams here, and one can walk through the lavish gardens and also look at the longest royal dining table.

Malwala Palace

This palace is one of Hyderabad’s rare wooden edifices, which is a blend of Mughal and Rajasthani styles. Built around 1845 for Dewan Chandulal, who was the custodian of the Nizam’s revenue records. Visitors can witness the exquisite wooden arches, the large Diwan Khana, and the rare manuscript collection here. This palace is famous for its central fountains and ornamental entrances. This place holds great historical significance and helps in understanding Hyderabad’s administrative history and noble lifestyles.

Hill Fort Palace

This beautiful palace was built in 1915 by Nizamat Jung, who was the chief justice of Hyderabad. The palace had architecture inspired by the castles described in Sir Walter Scott’s novels.
