5 legendary Indian temples that will leave you awestruck

India's rich heritage is seen in its intricately carved temples and buildings. While it is hard to decide which one is the most iconic but these grand temples possess striking architectural details, but they also possess a deep spiritual importance.
Let us take a closer look at these ancient and impressive temples

2/6

Konark Sun Temple, Odisha

With seven horses and twenty-four carved wheels, the Konark Sun Temple resembles the Sun God's gigantic chariot. Built in the 13th century, it represents the journey of the Sun across the horizon. The temple is a wonder of ancient Indian architecture due to its beautiful carvings and astronomical precision. Konark is not just an ancient monument but also a sacred place, located on the eastern coast of India, where the sun first rises on the earth. Along with Puri and Bhubaneswar, the region is included in Odisha's spiritual Golden Triangle.

3/6

Kedarnath Temple, Uttarakhand

The Kedarnath Temple in the state of Uttarakhand is one of the holiest places in India situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters above sea level in the Himalayas. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is devoted to Lord Shiva and is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. The pilgrimage to the temple is spiritual but strenuous because of its isolation from the world, enveloped by snow-capped mountains, which provides a feeling of holiness and divinity.

4/6

Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai

A lively representation of Tamil culture, the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai is devoted to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Shiva. The temple is constructed with sleek carvings, sculptures, and massive gopurams, and its night aarti is a must-watch. The gopurams in this location are stunning in the manner in which they rise majestically, with the tallest rising to as much as 170 feet in height. The beguiling beauty of the temple is complemented by the Thousand Pillar Hall, which features breathtaking carvings and singing pillars that produce diverse sounds upon impact.

5/6

Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Chennai

This mythological Shiva temple is located at Mylapore. The temple was given this name due to the mention of 'Kapalam,' or skull, in a myth of losing part of the skull of Shiva. The best example of Dravidian architecture, this temple is not only renowned for its vibrant festivities, especially Paguni Peruvizha, but also full of energy, music, and spirituality.

6/6

Annamalaiyar Temple, Thiruvannamalai

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, here by the name Annamalaiyar, spread over nearly 25 acres of land, at the base of sacred Arunachala Hill. Thousands of pilgrims pass through every month to perform Girivalam—a barefoot circuit around the Arunachala Hill. Spiritual draw of the temple, enormous towers, and rituals deeply ingrained render it a pilgrimage place for people wanting to find peace and ancient heritage.
