5 floating islands in the world that seem too magical to be real

If you have never heard of the floating islands phenomenon, you really need to plan a trip to experience some! Some of these are natural and some are man-made masses of vegetation. These wonders often look like mirages and showcase the incredible interplay of ecology, tradition, and innovation. Let’s have a look at 5 floating islands in the world. (Istock)

Uros Floating Islands – Lake Titicaca, Peru & Bolivia

You’ll be amazed to see Uros Floating Islands in Lake Titicaca which also happens to be the world’s highest navigable lak. Uros people call these artificial islands their home. These islands are made using totora reeds, which are abundant in the lake. Each island has families, houses, watchtowers, and even schools made from the same reeds. The Uros culture predates Inca civilization, and despite modern influences. (Istock)

Loktak Lake’s Phumdis – Manipur, India

Loktak Lake in northeast India is noted for its phumdis, circular, floating biomass formations of soil. These are natural islands which are unique to the region. The floating island is also home to Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is the only floating national park in the world! It is also the refuge of the endangered Sangai deer (Manipur brow-antlered deer). Phumdis also support fishing communities that live in huts built on top of them. (Istock)

Floating Gardens of Inle Lake – Myanmar

Inle Lake in Myanmar is home to a different kind of floating island, the agricultural marvels are known as floating gardens. The Intha people living here have developed this technique over centuries. They create islands by weaving together water hyacinths and aquatic plants. These gardens are used to grow vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans. (Istock)

Kawaguchi Lake’s Seasonal Floating Islands – Japan

Lake Kawaguchi, near Mount Fuji, is also home to floating islands. During seasonal changes, small mats of algae and vegetation occasionally break free and drift across the lake. Though not permanent, these floating land masses are often mistaken for mystical phenomena due to the misty surroundings and the iconic backdrop of Mount Fuji. (Istock)

Artificial Floating Islands – Maldives

As climate change and rising sea levels threaten the very existence of low-lying island nations, the Maldives has turned to technology. Innovative projects are underway to build artificial floating islands for tourism and habitation. Using modular platforms with embedded infrastructure, these man-made islands are designed to float and adapt to sea level fluctuations. (Canva)
