5 countries where you can drive with your Indian driving licence

Driving in a foreign country can completely transform the way you travel, giving you the freedom to explore beyond fixed itineraries and crowded tourist circuits. For Indian travellers, this is possible in several destinations, but it comes with conditions. While a valid Indian driving licence can be used in a few countries, it is typically accepted only for a limited period, must be in English, and often needs to be supported by an International Driving Permit (IDP). Rules can also vary within countries, especially in federal systems like the United States and Canada.
Here’s a clear look at five countries where you can drive cars or bikes with an Indian licence, along with what that actually means on the ground.

2/6

United Kingdom

One destination where Indian travellers can conveniently rent and drive cars or motorcycles is the United Kingdom, thanks to relatively simple driving rules for visitors. Indian tourists can legally drive in the country for up to 12 months from their date of arrival, provided their driving licence is in English.
A major benefit for travellers is that an International Driving Permit is generally not mandatory, making the process far easier and reducing extra documentation hassles. After completing 12 months in the country, drivers would need to apply for a UK driving licence. For most tourists, however, this period is more than sufficient to experience the country’s famous road trips, countryside drives, and scenic routes.

3/6

Australia

Australia is a fantastic destination for road trips, though driving rules vary from one state and territory to another. This means the acceptance of an Indian driving licence depends largely on the region you are visiting. In many parts of the country, travellers are allowed to drive for up to three months with an Indian licence, provided it is in English or accompanied by an officially certified translation.
Whether you intend to drive a car or ride a motorcycle, your licence must clearly mention the categories of vehicles you are authorised to operate. Some states and territories may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a formal English translation. Although the regulations may appear slightly complicated at first, preparing in advance can make the process fairly straightforward.

4/6

New Zealand

Tourists consider New Zealand as one of the countries which offer the best environment for those who wish to travel around the country in their own car or motorbike. Here, tourists are allowed to drive in the country for 12 months if their driving license is valid and written in English. The duration has been increased by some recent regulations, but the maximum duration is considered to be 12 months.
Tourists can use the same license to drive cars and motorbikes. New Zealand is renowned for its stringent rules on road safety; hence, tourists must adhere to the local road safety laws even if their license is acceptable in the country. New Zealand's small size and good road network make it suitable for tourists to drive around the country.

5/6

United States

Driving in the United States using an Indian driving license is feasible; however, it is arguably the most complicated one among all. Here, there is no common law for all states – each state decides what rules govern driving within its jurisdiction. In many cases, foreign citizens from India can drive for up to three months after obtaining a permit issued by their home state. The only requirement is to have the document written in English.
Nevertheless, it is necessary to understand what requirements the rental services have. Even when the driving license is legal according to state laws, the car renting services require having an International Driving Permit. Moreover, when it comes to riding motorcycles, some additional checks might be required. In order to make your travel less stressful, it would be useful to do some research beforehand.

6/6

Canada

Canada practices almost the same way as the United States does in the sense that different laws apply to each province and not necessarily the same laws apply in all parts of the nation. Indian driving licence owners are permitted to drive in most provinces after coming into the province for a certain period of time which ranges between 60 and 90 days. It should be noted that the licence must be in English language only, while an International Driving Permit is often needed or recommended.
Whether you have got permission to drive cars and motorcycles depends on the categories available in your licence. It is therefore advisable to find out what exactly are the requirements that you need for driving in Ontario, BC or any other province. When those are sorted out then there is no doubt that one will enjoy the beautiful scenery of Canada through driving.
