10 oldest forests in the world and the countries they are in

There are some forests on Earth that are so old they stretch back millions of years, even through drastic changes in climate, geography, and biodiversity. These are often called “living museums” due to their ability to harbor plant species that have remained unchanged since prehistoric times. From the lush tropical rainforests to the tree groves in remote mountain regions, these are some of the oldest forests in the world. Here are ten of the oldest forests in the world.

2/11

Daintree Rainforest, Australia

Estimated to be about 180 million years old, the Daintree Rainforest is often considered the world’s oldest surviving rainforest. Located in Queensland, Australia, this remarkable ecosystem is even older than the Amazon and dates back to the time of the dinosaurs. It is home to an exceptional diversity of life, including 12 of the planet’s 19 families of primitive flowering plants. With its thick vegetation, ancient plant life, and rare wildlife, the Daintree remains one of the most scientifically significant natural environments on Earth.

3/11

Borneo Lowland Rainforest

The Borneo Lowland Rainforest, which is believed to be around 140 million years old, covers the island of Borneo, which is shared by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. It remains one of the most biodiverse places on earth, with some of its inhabitants being the endangered Bornean orangutan. The towering Dipterocarps and high biodiversity of this rainforest make it one of the last remaining wilderness areas on earth today.

4/11

Taman Negara, Malaysia

Referred to as one of the oldest tropical rainforests on the face of the Earth, the Taman Negara Rainforest is believed to be over 130 million years old. It covers the Malaysian states of Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan, and its protected forest ecosystem harbors many different kinds of flora and fauna, including endangered species like the Malayan tiger, Asian elephants, and tapirs.

5/11

Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest, which has been around for over 55 million years, is the largest tropical rainforest on Earth, covering many countries like Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. It has been named the “lungs of the Earth” because of its unparalleled biodiversity, housing millions of different kinds of plant, animal, and insect life, most of which remain undiscovered.

6/11

Hyrcanian Forests in Azerbaijan

The Caspian Hyrcanian Mixed Forests, situated along the southern shores of the Caspian Sea in Iran and parts of Azerbaijan, are believed to be between 25 million and 50 million years old. The lush temperate rainforests are the last remnants of ancient broad-leaved forests that once dominated the Northern Hemisphere. Today, they are valued for their ecological significance and biodiversity.

7/11

Yakushima Forest in Japan

Yakushima Forest, situated in Yakushima Island, Japan, is famous for its ancient cedar trees called Yakusugi, some of which are believed to be over 7,000 years old. The misty climate, mossy rocks, and deep green forests provide an almost mystifying environment. The beauty of the Yakushima Forest inspired the landscapes in the animated movie Princess Mononoke.

8/11

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the US

The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, located in the White Mountains of California in the Inyo National Forest, is home to some of the oldest living trees in the world. Many of the bristlecone pines in the area are over 5,000 years old. In spite of the extreme environmental conditions, the bristlecone pines have managed to endure for over 5,000 years. This has made the area an attractive destination for both researchers and nature lovers.

9/11

Kakamega Forest in Kenya

The Kakamega Forest, which is over two million years old, is located in the western part of Kenya. This is considered to be the easternmost remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest. This is also the only tropical rainforest in Kenya. There is a wide variety of bird life, as well as butterflies and primates, in the area. Though not as popular as other rainforests, it does offer guided walking trails.

10/11

Réunion National Park

The Réunion National Park, which is home to vast tracts of forests, volcanic peaks, and deep valleys, is considered to be between two and 2.5 million years old. Situated in the volcanic island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, it has unique ecosystems that are home to endemic flora and fauna that can be found nowhere else in the world.

11/11

Pando in the US

The Pando, which is located in the Fishlake National Forest in Utah, is not considered to be a forest in the traditional sense. This is because it consists of a massive number of quaking aspen trees that have formed a single root system. This is considered to be over 80,000 years old and is considered to be one of the oldest living things in the world. This grove of trees, which exceeds 100 acres, is considered to be an outstanding example of the resilience of nature.

Where is the congo basin forest and where is the Upper Guinea Forest? It seems to me you have missed two of the oldest and very important forests of the world.
