10 countries with the maximum airline passengers

Air travel today is no longer a luxury–it’s become a part of everyday life for many people. Whether it’s a quick work trip, a long-awaited vacation, a visit to family, or flying abroad to study, millions of people take to the skies each year. And as flights become more affordable and routes better connected, air travel is now one of the easiest ways to get around.

But some countries naturally see a lot more air traffic than others. Factors like land size, population, tourism, and business play a big role. According to the latest data from World Population Review, here are the ten countries with the highest number of airline passengers:

2/11

United States– 666.1 million passengers

With cities spread across a massive landscape, flying is often the fastest and most practical choice in the U.S. Airports like Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles are among the busiest in the world, and it shows. The country sees over 666 million airline passengers, making it the most travelled airspace globally.

3/11

China– 440.3 million passengers

China’s huge population and growing economy have made flying a common part of everyday life. Whether for business, leisure, or internal travel, airports in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou are always buzzing. The country handles over 440 million passengers each year.

4/11

Russia– 96.8 million passengers

Covering an enormous land area, many parts of Russia are only accessible by air. Travelling between regions by road or rail isn’t always practical, which is why air travel is so essential. Around 97 million passengers fly across Russia annually.

5/11

India – 84 million passengers

India’s aviation sector is expanding fast. As ticket prices become more affordable and more cities get connected, flying has become accessible to more people. With airlines like IndiGo, Vistara, and Air India operating nationwide, over 84 million passengers take to the skies in India every year.See more: Cheap Flights Booking Tips: How to get cheap flights and beat airline algorithms; tips and tricks

6/11

Ireland– 74.1 million passengers

Ireland may not have a massive population, but it stands out despite its size, its weight in air traffic. That’s largely due to its extensive network of international flights across Europe and beyond. Each year, more than 74 million passengers pass through Irish airspace.

7/11

Brazil– 61.9 million passengers

With many of its cities spread far apart, air travel is often the most convenient way to move across Brazil. Key hubs like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro keep the country’s air network active, carrying nearly 62 million passengers each year.

8/11

Mexico– 54.2 million passengers

A mix of thriving tourism and busy urban centres keeps Mexico’s airports lively. From Mexico City to Cancun and Guadalajara, passenger traffic regularly crosses the 54 million mark, supported by both local and international flyers.

9/11

Japan– 45.4 million passengers

Japan may be famous for its high-speed rail, but air travel still plays a big role– especially when it comes to travelling between islands or covering longer domestic distances. More than 45 million passengers use Japan’s airports every year.

10/11

Spain– 43.4 million passengers

Spain’s scenic cities, beaches, and cultural hotspots attract travellers from all over. Places like Madrid, Barcelona, and island destinations like Mallorca ensure that air travel remains key to Spain’s tourism economy, with more than 43 million flyers annually.

11/11

South Korea– 34 million passengers

Despite its smaller size, South Korea sees a high number of air travellers– mainly because of the extremely popular Seoul–Jeju Island route. Domestic travel makes up a big chunk of the nearly 34 million passengers flying in the country each year.
