Great Hornbill

The Great Hornbill, one of the largest hornbill species, is an awe-inspiring bird to encounter in India’s tropical forests, particularly in Assam, Kerala, and the Western Ghats. With its distinctive yellow and black casque (the prominent, horn-like structure on its beak) and vibrant plumage, the Great Hornbill is a true spectacle.
Where to spot: The Great Hornbill can be spotted in Western Ghats, Northeast India, and parts of Assam and Kerala. Ideal locations include Kaziranga National Park, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, and Nanda Devi National Park.

Indian Peafowl (Peacock)

Indian Peafowl or peacock is among the most colourful birds in India. These beautiful birds are noted for their dazzling and tail feathers. During the mating season, the male unfurls its beautiful tail in a courtship display, showcasing an array of blues, greens, and golds. ​
Where to spot
: These are found across various parts of India, particularly in forested areas and grasslands, the peacock is not only a symbol of beauty but also India’s national bird. Jammu and Kashmir, east Assam, south Mizoram, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have high populations of peacock.

Indian Roller

The Indian Roller is a vibrant bird often seen perched along roadsides or in open fields. Its bright blue and turquoise feathers, coupled with a striking greenish belly, make it a standout in the Indian jungles.


Where to spot: The Indian Roller can be found across India in open fields, grasslands, and cultivated areas, especially during the winter months. Popular places to spot them include Ranthambore National Park, Kanha National Park, and even along roadsides in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

Himalayan Monal

The state bird of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the Himalayan Monal is a beautiful pheasant with a remarkable, multicolored plumage. Its bright blue, green, and purple feathers, along with a distinct crest on its head, make it one of the most visually striking birds in the Indian Himalayas. ​

: The Himalayan Monal can be spotted in the high-altitude regions of the Indian Himalayas, particularly in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Popular locations include Nanda Devi National Park and Valley of Flowers.

Malabar Trogon

The gorgeous and colourful Malabar Trogon is native to the Western Ghats. The bird looks absolutely stunning with its colourful plumage. The male has a striking combination of bright red and emerald green feathers. The female on the other hand, has a more subdued appearance with a mix of brown and yellow tones. This elusive bird inhabits the dense rainforests and is often spotted near streams and waterfalls.​
Where to spot:
The Malabar Trogon can be spotted primarily in the Western Ghats, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, and parts of Tamil Nadu. It's often found in forested areas near streams, waterfalls, or ravines.
